LAYTON -- Three educational facilities in the Top of Utah will be the focal point for a public-private partnership with Microsoft Corp., to offer free, online computer training and certification courses.
More than 5,000 vouchers for the online training are to be distributed statewide by all eight of the Utah College of Applied Technology facilities.
State officials announced Wednesday the free training for Microsoft products.
They include:
- 2,500 vouchers for Microsoft Business Professional E-Learning courses. A voucher recipient may select any one of the Microsoft Office 2003 or 2007 programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.) and receive up to six to eight individual lessons (about one hour each) within that program.
- 2,500 vouchers for Microsoft certification exams. Each certification is for a specific Microsoft Office product. Exam vouchers are for Office 2003 (1,250 vouchers) and Office 2007 (1,250). After training, voucher recipients will be referred to a Certiport-certified testing center near them (most UCAT campuses have these testing centers) for testing.
- 625 vouchers for Information Technology Professional E-Learning courses for more advanced products such as Sequel that would be used by IT professionals.
Vouchers are available online, through the Ogden-Weber, the Davis, and the Bridgerland Applied Technology Colleges. In some areas, the vouchers are to be picked up at campuses.
The free online education is available for 90 days. It started Wednesday and runs through Aug. 24.
"No matter which company you work for, the majority of companies function off of Microsoft office," said James Larson, DATC Marketing and Community Relations director.
According to Microsoft, the company is providing a million vouchers nationwide for free classes through a program called Elevate America.
