Business thanked for beautifying Clearfield's Steed Park

CLEARFIELD -- The city saved an estimated $30,000 in labor costs to fix up Steed Park thanks to one company's volunteer efforts. That's why the officials took a moment to commend Lifetime Products.

The council discussed the project at its recent city council meeting.

Mayor Don Wood said the more than 800 employees who volunteered for three hours on Oct. 9 did the city a huge favor.

"It is an amazing transformation," Wood said.

The entire Steed Park was affected by the efforts. Volunteer crews not only cleaned it up, they threw themselves into various projects, such as reroofing and painting the bowery, installing roughly 60,000 square feet of sod, trimming shrubbery and more.

"They did so much," Wood said. "It was incredible."

Wood said the savings could be as much as $13 an hour per person just in labor costs. That works out to about $30,000 in labor.

Lifetime was awarded a plaque and was praised during a barbecue at the park following the event, but Wood also wanted to give them praise during the city council meeting.

"I have only seen a project to that magnitude twice," Wood said. "Both times it was with Lifetime."

Community Services Director Tracy Heun said Lifetime helped with a project about five years ago. She explained that the city has to have a project that can accommodate a group of 800 volunteers.

The work on Steed Park was something the city needed, and it could accommodate that many volunteers, Heun said.

Lifetime supplied the people and paid roughly $8,700 for the sod. The city spent another $18,000 for supplies to help get the project under way, Heun said.

"They do such a great job," Heun said. "It is very organized."

She explained that everyone is assigned to teams, and they each have specific tasks. Wood, too, was impressed with the speed and ease of the project.

"I've never seen sod laid so fast in my life," he said.

Multiple officials said they were grateful for the volunteer effort.
