SALT LAKE CITY -- A Utah company is promising to tighten nuclear materials handling rules after discovering it took in waste with radioactivity levels higher than allowed.
Healthy Environment Alliance Utah chief Christopher Thomas says the state shouldn't let Salt Lake City-based EnergySolutions Inc. off the hook. He's calling for a stiff fine.
KSTU-TV reports the company found 23 drums of material accepted for disposal in Utah exceeded low-level Class A radioactive waste standards.
Utah prohibits materials with higher class B and C levels.
Company chief executive Val Christiansen says EnergySolutions is "troubled" by the finding and was taking steps to make sure it never happens again.
Thomas calls it "absolutely astounding" the company didn't know what kind of nuclear waste it took in.
