LAYTON -- Gas prices in Utah have risen 14 cents in one week and will probably continue to rise.
According to the AAA daily fuel gauge report, the current average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is $3, up from $2.86 per gallon last week.
Utah had the lowest national gas prices throughout most of January, but 13 states now have lower prices than Utah. Most of those states are in the Midwest.
Only a month ago, average regular gas prices in the state were $2.80, and a year ago, prices were $2.74.
In Ogden, prices average $2.95 per gallon, up 24 cents from a month ago.
Utah AAA spokeswoman Rolayne Fairclough said prices have risen all over the country during the past few days, not just in Utah.
"Recent uncertainty about the political turmoil in Egypt has helped to make investors nervous, forcing up the price of crude," said Fairclough. "(But) over the past week, investors finally took notice that the United States' oil reserves had risen, showing a decrease in demand, which helped to stabilize the price per barrel."
Fairclough said gas prices will likely continue to go up, while not at the current rate.
"Prices typically go up from here and are at their highest in the summer," she said, "so they'll probably keep going up."
Clearfield resident Marni Valenzuela, who purchased gas at the Maverik Country Store at 87 N. Main St. in Layton on Tuesday, said she was shocked to see how much prices had risen since the last time she filled up.
"This is ridiculous," she said. "I put gas in my car about two weeks ago and it was about 20 cents lower. I won't be able to afford gas soon."
Among the areas where AAA tracks fuel prices, the least expensive gasoline in the country is in Casper, Wyo., where for the second consecutive month the average price of gas is $2.68.
The highest average price in the nation is in Wailuku, Hawaii, where the average price per gallon is $4.01.
Among the lower 48 states, the highest average price reported by AAA is in Eureka, Calif., where the average price is $3.62. California's average price of $3.41 is the highest price in the lower 48 states.
