AMERICAN FORK -- Neighborhood complaints of a pungent smell have prompted an oil refinery in American Fork to shut down.
The Deseret News reports on Thursday that Rock Canyon Oil, a used oil refinery in American Fork, shut down after complaints from local residents.
Community members say the strong smell coming from the plant caused eye irritation and triggered headaches and nausea.
American Fork and Lehi fire departments have received 145 calls about the smell of natural gas in the area since late January.
Fire department officials said the area around the plant has tested positive for traces of carbon monoxide.
Gary Maxwell, the general manager of Rock Canyon Oil, says the traces of carbon monoxide are small and not dangerous.
