SLC mayor aims to ban electronic billboards

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker says electronic billboards should be banned from the city because they are a distraction to drivers.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports Wednesday Becker voiced his concerns to the City Council, which will meet on April 5 to discuss a proposed ordinance to ban the signs.

Becker's spokesman Art Raymond says the billboards are incompatible with the city's landscape and the flickering, bright lights can distract drivers.

Salt Lake City has six electronic billboards near major roads, but permits for three of them are under dispute.

If the ordinance is passed, it would force advertising companies to take down the billboards.

The companies argue there are no definitive studies that show adverse effects.
