SALT LAKE CITY -- Backers of electronic billboards are seeking support among Salt Lake City Council members against Mayor Ralph Becker's call for banning the bright and changeable signs.
Representatives from sign companies YESCO and Reagan Outdoor Advertising brought small business owners and city residents to tell council members Tuesday that they'd be hurt by a ban on electronic billboards.
The Deseret News reports that no vote was taken, but the issue drew a lot of attention.
YESCO representative Jeff Young cites a Virginia Tech study that found no relationship between traffic accidents and electronic billboards.
Utah AMBER Alert coordinator Paul Murphy says the more electronic billboards the better to help find abducted children.
But a city community and economic development official says Salt Lake City doesn't have to look like Las Vegas.
