Ian Abercrombie, actor who played Elaine’s boss on 'Seinfeld,' dies at 77

LOS ANGELES — Ian Abercrombie, 77, the British character actor who played Elaine’s demanding boss, Mr. Pitt, on “Seinfeld,” died Thursday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said his friend Cathy Lind Hayes. He suffered complications of kidney failure and recently had been diagnosed with lymphoma.

Report: Utah ranks No. 7 in overall health

OGDEN -- Utah currently ranks seventh in the nation when it comes to the overall health of its residents, the same spot it held in last year's rankings.

The 22nd annual America's Health Rankings shows Utahns have a lower prevalence of smoking, binge drinking and obesity than other states. In addition, the state has a low rate of preventable hospitalizations, low rates of cancer deaths, cardiovascular deaths, infant mortality and adult diabetes.

The report shows a 10 percent drop in preventable re-hospitalizations among Medicare patients for illnesses such as pneumonia, asthma, congestive heart disease and diabetes.

Officials outline cancer combat strategy

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah has a new plan to prevent and control cancer.

State officials announced their recommendations Tuesday when the Utah Department of Health's Cancer Control Program released its 2011-2015 Comprehensive Cancer Prevention and Control Plan, as well as its 2011 Utah Small Area Report.

"Just because we are a healthy state doesn't mean we don't have to worry about cancer," said Jodie Pond, a health program coordinator for the Utah Cancer Control Program. "There are some things we can do."

SYRACUSE -- Police officers and firefighters banded together to raise money for a 15-year-old girl who has bone cancer.

On Tuesday, representatives from the two agencies presented Maddie Cook and her parents, Kevin and Sue Cook, with a check for $11,389 -- almost triple what has been raised in the past, said Police Chief Brian Wallace.
