Gil A. Miller candidate for Kaysville City Council

Name: Gil A. Miller

Age: 50

Occupation: CPA/Forensic Accountant

Family: Married to Mary Ann for 23 years. Five children, two in college, three in Kaysville schools.

Hobbies: Piano, gardening, reading

1. Name some of the qualifications you possess that makes you the best choice to represent your city?

I have enjoyed serving Kaysville during the last 4 ¬½ years I have been on the council. I believe my actions and voting record have been responsible and in the best interest for Kaysville's residences and businesses. I believe my professional background in fiscal areas has also been an asset to the community. While there have been many difficult decisions the council has made over the past several years, I believe every issue was dealt with in a manner that benefitted the city as a whole.

2. What political ideals and philosophies guide your decision-making process?

My political ideals and philosophies are not necessary governed by one political party or another. Kaysville's uniqueness comes from all aspects of its citizenry. Every political party and possibly every political philosophy is represented in the 8500 households and businesses within her boundaries. I am perhaps influenced most by the doctrines of the U.S. Constitution, its amendments, and the Declaration of Independence.

3. What is the most important issue facing your city?

In my opinion, the most difficult issues involve the city's residential growth and how to make sure the city and private business can service this additional demand. Kaysville is indeed a City of Distinction in many ways. The distinctive characteristics that make Kaysville great not only keep residents from leaving, but also attract others. One of those attractive distinctions is our low city property tax rates. Coupling low tax rates with mostly residential rooftops, means Kaysville for me and nearly 26,000 others is a City of Distinction indeed.

4. Name some qualities that you possess that make you a good team worker and able to bring consensus among city leaders.

I believe my respect for my fellow council members is what enables me to be a good team worker. Over the past nearly five years, I have learned to better focus on what my fellow council members are truly saying, rather than think of my next sentence. I have also learned that it is sometimes better to delay a decision until each council member feels sufficient facts are brought to light, rather than pressing forward without consensus merely to move quickly to the next issue.

5. What do you think will be some major issues your city will face a generation from now?

Managing our residential growth with adequate services will be a challenge for many councils to come. I plan on working over the next four years to help ensure our 8500 households that the services we expect and need are, and will be, available. I believe the city has continued to provide excellent services even in this time of economic downturn. Like many of us, Kaysville City employees received no pay increases this year to help manage our 2010 budget, again a budget without a tax increase. While I am hopeful the economy is improving, I will strive to manage the affairs of our city in a manner consistent with Kaysville's past, yet necessary to provide for its future.
