Man hit by car in Ogden, critically injured

OGDEN -- A man in his early 20s was in critical condition Monday night after being hit by a car at 3850 Harrison Blvd.

Ogden Duty Lt. Danielle Croyle said the man was walking north toward oncoming traffic in the outside lane of Harrison Boulevard when he was hit. She said there was no indication that the driver of the vehicle that hit him was speeding.

The man, in critical condition, was taken by ambulance to McKay-Dee Hospital.

Crowd gathers as Volkswagen burns in Walmart parking lot

CLINTON -- A car fire in the middle of a Walmart parking lot caused a bit of unwanted attraction as firefighters worked to put out the flames, says Clinton Fire Chief Jason Poulsen.

"So many people stopped to see what was happening, it caused a crowd-control problem for a minute," Poulsen said.

Firefighters were called to Walmart, 632 N. 2000 West, at 4:10 p.m. Monday after a 1968 Volkswagen Beetle's engine caught fire.

Hot rod heaven: Car show brings families together

CLEARFIELD -- In 1980, Brent Sanders bought a beat-up, 16-year-old Ford Mustang for $700, a hunting rifle and a .22 pistol.

"You should have seen the look on the face of the lady at the Motor Vehicles Department when she asked what I paid for it," Sanders said. "She decided to just put down the $700 and leave the rest off."

Car list launches the 26th-greatest story of car misery ever told

Edmunds, normally a publisher of reliable automotive information, last week produced a list of the "100 Greatest Cars of all Time."

Atop the list you have the 1932 Ford V8, which Edmunds says was the first really great working man's quality car.

I don't know about that, but No. 9 is the Ford Model T, a real classic. There are many fine Porsche, Chevy and Mercedes products mentioned. The Duesenberg ("It's a doozie!") is here.

What men drive may reveal sexual motives

The racier the car, the racier the hormones.

That's what research results say about some men when it comes to conspicuous spending and their desire for sexual dalliances.

The series of studies, "Peacocks, Porsches and Thorstein Veblen: Conspicuous Consumption as a Sexual Signaling System," was conducted with nearly 1,000 test subjects and published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Veblen, an American economist and sociologist, popularized the term "conspicuous consumption" of the leisure class more than 100 years ago and pooh-poohed its contributi

Used-car market heats up

Economic pressures of the last few years have pushed many consumers out of the new-car market in search of a cheaper alternative, which would be good news for used-car dealers, if only they could find enough cars to sell.

(MATTHEW ARDEN HATFIELD/Standard-Examiner) Workers on Monday are busy constructing the new Larry H. Miller auto dealership at Riverdale Road and 1500 West in Riverdale. Other businesses are also building in the city, plus Sam’s Club is gearing up for an interior remodel and addition of a drive-up canopy.

RIVERDALE -- If the construction in Riverdale is any indication, the economy seems to be picking up.

"There are signs of life," said Larry Hansen, city administrator. "There's no secret we've had people knocking around, looking, with the economic recovery."
