Files show how priest child abuse was generational

LOS ANGELES -- Robert Van Handel was a 15-year-old seminarian at St. Anthony's, a prestigious Franciscan boarding school, when, he said, a priest slipped into the infirmary where he was recovering from a fever and began to molest him. The priest told him it would help draw the fever out.

More than a decade later, Van Handel himself was molesting children while working as a Franciscan priest at the same Santa Barbara boarding school. Van Handel formed a boys' choir for local children and chose his victims from among its ranks for eight years.

Lent provides opportunity for spiritual growth

OGDEN -- Like the 40-day fast in which Jesus Christ went without food or water as he prepared for his earthly mission, Christians who celebrate Lent are giving up some of their earthly desires from now until Easter.

The Lenten season, which officially began with Ash Wednesday this week, is designed to bring believers to a better knowledge of Christ and enhance their journey with him.

"This year, we are concentrating on the Lenten journey to Easter joy," said Sister Stephanie Mongeon, a nun at Mount Benedict Monastery in South Ogden. "We are stressing those things that are barriers to Christ's love."

Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York, president of the bishops conference, said he hopes that Penn State and other institutions learn from both the bishops' failings and their reforms.

Penn State, priest scandals reveal a pattern, victims say

It's how John Enriquez, who says he was sexually abused by a Catholic priest as an altar boy, sees the wave of allegations of molestations and cover-ups involving Penn State University.

"To me, it's the same thing," said the 43-year-old Oxnard, Calif., resident, comparing the mushrooming Pennsylvania drama to the clergy abuse scandal. "People in power abusing the power. People with the trust of the people thinking they can get away with it."
