CCS outreach coordinator leaves career in finance to help others

If you could do anything in the world and not worry about how much money you were making or where you were going to be, what would you do?

That was the question posed to Maresha Bosgieter. Her answer was to leave her career as a financial adviser at Merrill Lynch after 15 years and start working at Catholic Community Services of Northern Utah in Ogden as the volunteer and community outreach coordinator.

'Dream builders' in Top of Utah given kudos

OGDEN — Catholic Community Services honored several local philanthropists at their annual Dream Builder’s Breakfast on Thursday, but 9-year-old Armani McFarland clearly stole the show.

McFarland, a fourth-grader at Majestic Elementary School in Harrisville, was honored as CCS’s Young Philanthropist of the Year for her volunteer work in the community.

During the past year, McFarland organized a successful food drive for the Joyce Hansen-Hall Food Bank and followed that up with two separate drives for backpacks and coats.

Facing huge deficit, N. Utah food bank ends rent-assistance program

OGDEN — The economic struggles of Top of Utah residents are translating into hard times for the Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank.

At the end of March, the food bank disbanded a rent-assistance program that had served area residents for more than a decade.

“We’re running at a huge deficit right now,” said Northern Utah Catholic Community Services Director Marcie Valdez. “It was a difficult, difficult decision. Every day, 20 to 30 people come in looking for housing. … It does leave a huge gap in the community.”

Top of Utahns to be honored for service to community

OGDEN — An Ogden event will honor those whose efforts have greatly improved the lives of those most in need in the Top of Utah.

Catholic Community Services has announced plans to honor Armani McFarland, Charles Trentelman, Weber State University and the Sisters of Mount Benedict Monastery at its Dream Builder’s Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. May 2 at the Summit Hotel, 247 24th St., in Ogden.

Volunteers sought to help at CCS

OGDEN -- Catholic Community Services in Ogden is seeking volunteers to help at its reception desk.

Shifts will be either two hours or four hours, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Nonprofits: The holidays are over, but charity is still in season

OGDEN — The holidays are over, but those associated with area nonprofit agencies hope the spirit of giving will hang around a little longer.

“The client need does not diminish after the holidays are over,” said Karina Martin, volunteer coordinator for Catholic Community Services of Ogden and the Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank. “We’re still looking at 2,300 households getting food here each month.”

Food bank grateful for record outpouring of donations

OGDEN — More than 1,800 families will receive a holiday food and gift basket, thanks to a large contribution from several generous donors.

At the Catholic Community Services Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank on Wednesday morning, donors and volunteers busily packed items, including 21,000 eggs, 7,000 pieces of fresh fruit, turkey, ham, stuffing, Jell-O, butter, peanut butter, tuna, yams and even pet food. The total cost of the donated items came to nearly $30,000, a record high, according to officials involved in the event.

Thanksgiving run/walk breaks attendance record

OGDEN — The 27th Ogden Regional Medical Center’s annual walk/run was held Thanksgiving morning

Participants were asked to donate nonperishable food items and could choose between walking 2 miles or running 5 miles.

Prayer, Mass to precede Thanksgiving run/walk

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Members of the community have one final opportunity to participate in a Thanksgiving run/walk led by Sister Stephanie Mongeon, of Mount Benedict Monastery.

Mongeon and her fellow sisters at the monastery have announced that they will leave Ogden once their property is sold. But Mongeon will be present at 9 a.m. Thanksgiving Day when the 27th annual event begins in the southwest parking lot at Ogden Regional Medical Center, 5475 Adams Ave. Parkway in Washington Terrace.

OGDEN — They were in the presence of high-ranking religious leaders and donors who gave great sums of money.

But it was the actions of a 13-year-old that spurred those in attendance at the Catholic Community Services’ 30th Anniversary and Awards Breakfast on Wednesday to give a standing ovation.

Tanner Neeley, a Wahlquist Junior High School seventh-grader, is currently raising his third steer in an effort to provide meat for those in need and who depend upon the Ogden Catholic Community Services’ Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank for their sustenance.

Help for homeless vets today at Catholic Community Services

OGDEN — A special “stand down” for homeless veterans will be held today at Catholic Community Services office in Ogden, 2504 F Ave.

The stand down will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is an effort by the Veterans Administration to reach out to homeless vets who need help with benefits, employment, housing, mental health and substance abuse counseling, or any other issue.

There will be a distribution of supplies from community agencies and help applying for benefits. For more information, call 801-803-1183.

Boy Scouts to have food drive Saturday

OGDEN -- The Boy Scouts of America will hold their 26th annual Scouting for Food drive on Saturday.

The drive will help stock the Catholic Community Services' Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank.
