ACLU wants to discuss book that parents say promotes homosexuality

LAYTON -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Utah has requested a meeting with Davis School District Superintendent Bryan Bowles to discuss the constitutional implications of removing a book about gay parenting from elementary school library shelves.

OGDEN — An Ogden School District librarian told those attending a Monday panel discussion that safety needs to be addressed on both sides of the issue of censorship of a book in Davis district schools.

In an interview, Kathy Gambles said librarians in Ogden schools are required to be certified both as teachers and as librarians.

But, she said, this is only the case in five districts in the state. She said other districts rely only on aides or others untrained as librarians.

NORTH OGDEN -- Tempers flared Saturday afternoon at the North Ogden Arts Festival when local artist and Weber State University professor Steve Stones got some strange looks and comments over his art display.

When James Jones published "From Here to Eternity" in 1951, his editors had pulled back some of the frank language and description in his original draft. Big names on letter calling for China to end censorship

BEIJING -- A former secretary to Mao Zedong as well as an ex-publisher of the People's Daily are among retired Communist Party heavyweights who have published a toughly worded open letter calling on the Chinese government to abolish censorship.
