B.C. Lions tackle Ben Archibald poses with his 4-year-old triplets (from left) Kaylee, Tessa and Ashlyn in Vancouver, British Columbia, the day before the Lions won the Grey Cup on Sunday.

Former BYU lineman, Archibald makes grandmas proud

A week ago, I mentioned a couple of football players with Utah ties who figured to play key roles in the Grey Cup, the Super Bowl of the Canadian Football League.

I intended to list former BYU lineman Ben Archibald, but his name never made it into the list of B.C. Lions players.

No big deal, right?

Former USU Aggie Anthony Calvillo sets CFL's career passing mark

MONTREAL -- Anthony Calvillo is the CFL's career passing leader.

The Montreal Alouettes' quarterback broke Damon Allen's record of 72,381 passing yards with a 50-yard touchdown pass to Jamel Richardson. The milestone came on the final play of the third quarter in Monday's game against the Toronto Argonauts.

Allen was at Percival Molson Stadium, along with CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon, to honor the 39-year-old Calvillo. After Richardson's touchdown, play was stopped and Calvillo's family came on to the field to mark the moment.

Calvillo entered the game needing 258 yards to eclipse Allen's record.

Weber State tight end Tyrell Francisco (left) blocks during during practice at Stewart Stadium on Friday. Francisco was drafted by the CFL in May, but he will still play out his senior season at WSU.

Despite being CFL bound, Francisco focused on Wildcats

OGDEN -- Tyrell Francisco's future in professional football is waiting, but he's too busy to talk to the team that drafted him.

Francisco was taken in the fifth round (36th overall) by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League in May, despite having missed all of last season at Weber State to an Achilles tendon injury suffered in fall camp.

Adamson: Are you ready for some football ... CFL that is?

Ready for some real, live professional gridiron action?

It started on Thursday when the Canadian Football League began its 2011 regular season.

British Columbia and the defending champion Montreal Alouettes had the honor of kicking off the new campaign Thursday night, while on Friday Hamilton hosts Winnipeg and Toronto travels to Calgary.
