SOUTH OGDEN -- Before sitting down at a feast to give thanks, a large crowd of locals turned out Thursday morning to give back -- and work up an appetite in the process.
More than 1,200 people, dogs and even a goat showed up at Ogden Regional Medical Center's 24th annual Thanksgiving Day Run/Walk for Charity.
In addition to about $5,000 in cash, this year's participants donated more than five truckloads of food and goods to be divided among St. Anne's Center, Ogden Rescue Mission and The Salvation Army.
The run/walk is co-sponsored by Ogden Regional and the Newman Center at Weber State University. Participants choose either a 5-mile run or a 2-mile walk.
The top finishers' names are noted, but the event is designed to be non-competitive.
Sister Stephanie Mongeon, director of mission and community relations at the hospital, said there are more people in need than usual in the community right now because of the economic climate.
"Our economy has had many struggles this year, and we find people and families who are living through some very hard circumstances," Mongeon said. "This is one good way of assisting them, and a wonderful sign of gratitude for our many blessings."
Many people have traditionally brought their dogs along to the event. Lisa Hayes and daughter Cassie decided to mix things up a little by bringing Lucky, one of the goats they keep as pets at their West Haven home.
"We like to take them hiking up by Weber State, so we thought we'd bring him along," said Hayes, who works in Ogden Regional's labor and delivery area.
She said there are multiple benefits to participating in the run/walk.
"It's a great way to start Thanksgiving, help others and get some exercise."
Mongeon said the fact that participation was up this year while the economy remains down is a testament to the character of the community.
"These people make living positive and hopeful," she said. "They have the spirit of giving according to their means -- not extravagantly, but lovingly."
