Child rearing

There's plenty to keep author Adam Mansbach awake at night

LOS ANGELES -- A year ago, Adam Mansbach was an award-winning novelist and aspiring screenwriter wrapping up a two-year teaching job at Rutgers University. That was before his off-color picture book, "Go the F -- to Sleep," became an international phenomenon, catapulting the sleep-deprived father of one to the tops of best-seller lists and into the eye of a parenting maelstrom.

WASHINGTON — A food pyramid just for the under-2 set? Contrary to popular belief, children don’t usually outgrow their baby fat — and a new report urges steps to help prevent youngsters from getting too pudgy too soon.

Some desperate parents sedate their babies

A frazzled mother on a crowded flight tries to coax a screaming baby to sleep as surrounding passengers stare -- some in empathy, some in barely disguised annoyance. When the child doesn't calm down, the parent discreetly pulls a bottle of children's Benadryl from a diaper bag and administers a small dose.

Surveys and parental testimonials suggest that this scene is repeated every day in the skies over America and in other settings.

But the use of the antihistamine, known generically as diphenhydramine, to sedate babies is controversial, with at least one study suggesting it is a form of child abuse.
