NORTH SALT LAKE -- A HAWK in the sky is making it safer for Adelaide Elementary School students to walk to school.

At the request of the school and North Salt Lake City, the Utah Department of Transportation recently installed a new High Intensity Activated Crosswalk, or "HAWK," beacon at the intersection of U.S. 89 and 800 West in North Salt Lake.

Law officers: Toy guns look like real thing, create danger

In the middle of the night, the suspect appeared to be an adult male — and the gun looked real.

“It was the most intense, scariest situation I’ve ever been in,” said Davis County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Benedict.

WSU fair to help families prep for quake

OGDEN — Eight hundred plastic Easter eggs aren’t destined for Sunday baskets.

No, the colorful eggs have Saturday duty, teaching the importance of earthquake preparedness to kids who attend Weber State’s “ShakeUp: Drop, Cover, Hold On” event.

Davis may top 2011 child abuse cases well before 2012 is out

FARMINGTON — More people, heightened awareness and more criminal incidents has the number of child abuse cases opened at the Davis County Children’s Justice Center on pace to shatter the total case count for 2011.

From January through March of this year, 128 sexual or physical child abuse cases have been opened at the CJC in Farmington, said Susan Burton, the center’s development coordinator.

During 2011, a total of 364 cases were reported to the CJC, she said.

10 in Top of Utah arrested during national immigration roundup

OGDEN — Ten people in Weber, Davis and Box Elder counties were arrested last week as part of a nationwide roundup of convicted criminal immigrants, immigration fugitives and immigration violators.

Operation Cross Check resulted in more than 3,100 arrests nationwide, including 54 in Utah, according to information released Monday by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Seven-car accident sends at least 5 to hospital (video)

OGDEN — Five people injured in a seven-car accident Monday night didn’t have to wait long for medical help.

An eyewitness said an ambulance was waiting to turn just before 6 p.m. when the driver of a Hummer sped through a red light at 12th Street and Harrison Boulevard and hit three other vehicles.

U.S. Immigration arrests 10 from Top of Utah

OGDEN — Ten individuals in Weber, Davis, and Box Elder counties were arrested as part of a nationwide round up last week of convicted criminal aliens, immigration fugitives and immigration violators.

Pleasant View plans donation to graduation party

PLEASANT VIEW — The city council has approved up to $500 in funding for the Weber High School alcohol- and drug-free senior party at Toad’s Fun Zone. The donation will depend on the amount left in the police department budget.

3-year-old run over by car in Ogden still in critical condition

OGDEN — A 3-year-old remains in critical condition at the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City after he was hit by a car at a residence in the 900 East block of 1225 North around 1 p.m. Thursday, says Ogden Police Lt. Shawn Hamblin.

The Pocatello boy, who was not identified, was visiting relatives. He was playing with a child in the neighborhood when a woman in her 30s backed out of a driveway and ran over him, Hamblin said.

The name of the driver was not released. No charges have been filed.

Plaintiff: Only luck kept children safe in Silver Eagle explosion

FARMINGTON — Kristi Horne cried as she told jurors it was only a matter of luck that no one in her family was seriously hurt the day of the Silver Eagle explosion three years ago.

“If I had been home two minutes earlier, my babies would have been in my arms,” Horne said Friday in 2nd District Court in Farmington.

Brian and Kristi Horne are suing Silver Eagle Refining, saying they can’t sell their home because it has been stigmatized due to the damage caused by the refinery explosion on Nov. 4, 2009, in Woods Cross, and the fear that another explosion, or worse, could occur in the future.

Weber High student urges teen drivers to be safe after dropped muffin, crash

NORTH OGDEN — A lunchtime snack proved to be a recipe for near disaster Tuesday for a 16-year-old driver.

Gabby Correa was driving her dad’s Chevrolet truck west on 2950 North around 1 p.m., munching on a lemon-poppy seed muffin en route to Weber High School. The muffin fell out of her hand and landed on her arm.
