Blending of religion, politics a hot topic at WSU

OGDEN -- Do Mitt Romney's fellow presidential candidates have the right to challenge the nature of his religious faith? And should children enrolled in public schools be asked to pledge their allegiance to "one nation, under God"?

Diverse opinions flowed at Weber State University's Taboo Talks, this month focused on America's uneasy mixing of religion and politics.

Layton pastor comments on Romney, Mormonism

LAYTON — It’s time to build bridges instead of insulting Mormons, says one local pastor. The Rev. Myke Crowder, pastor of Christian Life Center in Layton and a member of the executive council of the National Clergy Council in Washington, D.C., said remarks made by Southern Baptist pastor and Rick Perry supporter Robert Jeffress have no place in a presidential debate.

Ex-pilot to speak about finding Christ

ROY -- The community is invited to attend Sunday as the North Central Baptist Church ushers in its fall program.

The church is kicking off fall programming with a special guest speaker and preacher. Mike Holloway from Kokomo, Ind., a Navy pilot who flew fighter jets off Navy carriers, will share his insights of how he turned his life to Christ.

Episcopal church in Ogden offers series on beliefs

OGDEN -- The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd is offering a six-week event that will address issues and beliefs within the church.

Via Media, which begins at 6 p.m. Monday at the church, 2374 Grant Ave., will include a meal, 20-minute DVD presentation and discussion, said Mark Letourneau, chairman of the adult education program at the church. The program is free of charge and open to anyone in the community.

Class is practical introduction to Christianity

OGDEN — The fall session of Alpha, a practical introduction to the Christian faith, will begin Sunday at Washington Heights Church. It continues through Nov. 20.

Women invited to participate in Christian retreat

OGDEN -- Women and young women from all Christian denominations in the Top of Utah are invited to attend an upcoming retreat sponsored by the Intermountain General Baptist Convention Sept. 30 through Oct. 1 in Midway.

Spiritual conference planned in SLC for IRS employees

SALT LAKE CITY -- Christian Fundamentalist Internal Revenue Employees will have its 10th annual national conference this Monday through July 1 at Little America in Salt Lake City.

Roy Baptist church plans Passover special event

ROY -- First Baptist Church of Roy, 2025 W. 5700 South, will host a special event, "Christ in the Passover," presented by Susan Mendleson, with Jews for Jesus, at 7 p.m. April 5.

If C.L.U.B.B. Jesus were to put out a classified advertisement for its newly expanded food pantry, the above statement likely is how it would read.

Two weeks into becoming a weekly drop site for the Utah Food Bank, volunteers at the young church said they want to help as many people as they can. Their only problem, they say, is getting the word out.

Combined Watch Night Service set

OGDEN — The combined Watch Night Service (New Zion Baptist, Second Baptist and Emery African Methodist Episcopal churches) will be held at New Zion Baptist Church, 2935 Lincoln Ave., Ogden, beginning at 9 p.m. Friday. There will be praise and worship, youth performances, dynamic preaching, testimony time and a candlelight communion service.

Doctor writes a Christmas book

J. Tucker Davis, of Draper, says the idea for his book “The Fourth Gift, A Christmas Story” came to him about 25 years ago. It wasn’t until 15 years later that the busy pediatrician began writing the story as a way to unwind at home after his evenings and weekends working in children’s urgent care. It was published this year (Bonneville Books, $12.99) for everyone to enjoy.
