Christmas Trees

A tree for all seasons

Removing the tree after Christmas is like unpacking after vacation -- a depressing job signaling the end of fun. So last year, we didn't do it.

That's right -- the Christmas tree in the Standard-Examiner's features department stayed up all year long.

It's not as bad as it sounds. Maybe our experience will even inspire you to have your own year-round tree.

Holiday items for sale on lots get Syracuse council's OK

SYRACUSE -- The sale of fireworks and Christmas trees will now be a permitted use within the city.

The city council recently approved some amendments to provisions in Title 8 and Title 10 of the city code. The changes were approved by a unanimous vote.

LAYTON -- For those ready to finally finish their after-Christmas cleaning and get rid of the old tree still in the front room, help is on the way.

Christmas trees, dusty decorations may trigger allergies

Time to pull the boxes out of the attic, hang up the wreath and wrap your house in lights and garland. Holiday decorations are making their annual debut, to the misery of some who suffer from asthma and allergies.

"You disturb dust and other debris that hasn't been touched for a year and it can certainly cause problems," says Dr. Richard Lockey, director of the allergy and immunology division at USF Health in Tampa.

If your symptoms have been under good control but lately you are short of breath, sneezing, wheezing or coughing, or have itchy, watery eyes or a runny or stuffy nose, the problem may be seasonal.

Hannah Hermann poses with her mother, Kaye Hermann, at their Riverdale home. Hermann will be a speaker at the annual Christmas Tree Jubilee to thank the public for a talking dictionary as well as a lift for her wheelchair, provided by funds raised through the jubilee.

Jubilee helps family face challenges

RIVERDALE -- Visiting Christmas Tree Jubilee may not top Hannah Hermann's list of to-do holiday events.

Yet it's safe to say the 20-year-old is reminded of this yuletide festival almost every day, whether she's reading a book or simply moving from room to room.

A talking dictionary, provided by funds raised at the tree auction, helps Hermann read words she doesn't understand. A chair lift, which runs along a track on the ceiling at her home, makes it easier for the disabled student to move from her bedroom to her bathroom.

Oh Christmas trees! Oh Christmas trees!

A Christmas tree might be decorated with homespun ornaments, glittery angels or fancy garlands.

Or it could be covered with snow hats and gloves, Utah Jazz gear, or all things Woody and Buzz.

From "Toy Story 3" to "A Christmas Story," from sugar plum fairies to the three bears, there are themes galore for the 80-plus trees starring in this year's Christmas Tree Jubilee.
