ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Authorities in Alaska say a church congregation in Anchorage evacuated Sunday morning services because of a carbon monoxide scare that turned out to be bear spray someone shot off in the basement.

Second Baptist to observe anniversary

OGDEN -- Second Baptist Church, 227 27th St., will observe its 40th anniversary at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 25.

As a prelude to the anniversary service the church is having a dinner theater presentation of "An Angel's Touch," a play about a mother's fervent prayer for God to intercede in her son's life.

New minister invites public to installation

OGDEN -- The public is invited as the Congregational United Church of Christ in Ogden holds a service of installation for pastor the Rev. Gage Church, at 3 p.m. Sept. 25.

Church began his ministry in Ogden on March 1. He graduated from United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities in 2009 and served one year as a resident chaplain at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where he specialized in psychiatric and addiction ministry.

Church will change fall meeting times

OGDEN -- Effective Sunday, the congregation of Ogden First Baptist Church and New Beginnings Christian Church will return to its regular worship schedule.

Sunday School will begin at 9:45 a.m. and the worship service will begin at 11 a.m.

Church to host open-mic concert

OGDEN -- The Congregational United Church of Christ, 3350 Harrison Blvd., is hosting an open-mic concert from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Ogden church welcomes all faiths to learn from Buddhism

OGDEN -- The Rev. Jerry Hirano looks relaxed as he sits in a room in the Ogden Buddhist Church, where he has been the minister since 1999. With him are his assistant ministers, Annette Koga and Mike Monson.

Hirano is also the minister -- or kaikyoshi in Japanese -- for the Salt Lake Buddhist Church and chairman of the Buddhist Churches of America Ministers Association.

He also teaches advanced classes in Jodo Shinshu, a branch of Mahayana Buddhism, which recognizes all people as potential buddhas.

Presentation discusses the science behind the Shroud of Turin

OGDEN -- The public is invited to attend a presentation about the science behind the study of the Shroud of Turin, the supposed burial cloth of Jesus.

No tickets are required for the event that will begin with Mass at 5 p.m. and a presentation following, at approximately 6:30 p.m. next Saturday at St. James Catholic Church, 495 N. Harrison Blvd.

Recognized by many as the cloth that wrapped the body of Jesus Christ when he was laid in his tomb and then resurrected, the Shroud of Turin has been studied extensively. "The most controversial and arguably the most important artifact in the world," is one description of the cloth offered by the Turin Shroud Center of Colorado.
