Riverdale places decibel restrictions on park noise

RIVERDALE — In an attempt to please both park patrons and residents living near the park, the Riverdale City Council has made ordinance changes that allow “more teeth” for law enforcement to enforce noise levels at city parks.

Police: No trends in South Weber crime report

SOUTH WEBER -- Davis County Sheriff John Olson recently reported to the city council about criminal activity in the area.

During the first quarter of this year, there were 286 citations in the city. During the second quarter there were only 188 citations.

Olson also reported 143 dispatch calls in the first quarter, with an increase to 160 calls second quarter.

PLEASANT VIEW — Two new vehicles will be bought for the police department, as council members approved up to $66,000 for the vehicles, equipment and installation.

Lower speed limit on part of Landfill Road

BRIGHAM CITY – The speed limit will be lowered to 40 mph on a mile-long stretch of 6800 North, which is also known as the Landfill Road.

Hooper residents want park name to memorialize Reagan visit

HOOPER — Not every small town can say that the leader of the free world gave a speech in its park.

Hooper can, and some residents want to memorialize the historic event by changing the name of the city’s oldest park. However, the feeling isn’t unanimous.

After much discussion, the city council recently gave tentative approval to changing the name of Hooper Park to Hooper Reagan Park.

Cemeteries -- is there enough room?

ROY -- Only 60 plots are left at the Roy City Cemetery, and now city leaders are asking if they want to stay in the cemetery business and if they do, what property will it use -- and if they don't, will a private cemetery step in to accommodate residents?

New zoning designation created in Syracuse

SYRACUSE — City officials have approved the creation of a business park zoning designation, even though the new zone won’t fit in a proposed development near Syracuse High School.

Utility rates on the rise in Roy

ROY — Residents will be paying more for city utilities, some as much as $9 per month starting in August, under the tentative budget adopted by the city council.

Because of those increases, the council decided not to increase property taxes.

Two main factors are combining to produce the utility increase.

Fruit Heights bans fireworks in some locations for 2012

FRUIT HEIGHTS — Concerned about fire danger along its border with the Utah National Forest, the city recently approved a new fireworks ordinance, outlining the section of the city where fireworks are banned for 2012.

Fireworks are not allowed in locations east of Mountain Road, starting at the Farmington border, across to north of 400 North along Highway 89.

City officials adopted various fireworks restrictions in past years, hoping to preventing the hills from catching on fire. “We’ve adopted different fire ordinances based on how dry we are each year,” said Mayor Todd Stevenson.

Syracuse creates new zoning classification

SYRACUSE — Driven by a request from a local business for better visibility, city leaders have adopted a new zoning classification.

Members of the city council voted to create a neighborhood services zoning designation. The request was driven by Russell Rentmeister of Rentmeister & Co. Inc.

The zoning designation is expected to create a zone that would be either isolated or transitional in nature, which would permit a mix of small-scale uses, including commercial, professional office and local services.

Farr West council members approve commercial development on farm

FARR WEST — Gearing up for booming growth in the area of 2700 North, council members approved the first two phases of commercial development on the Jim Randall Farm.

The development, a partnership between the city and professional planner John Jansen, is part of a joint Community Development Resource Agency plan with Pleasant View,

The Jim Randall Farm, which is approximately 78 acres, is just off 2700 North, along 2000 West, in an area the city has planned for commercial business. Planning Commissioner Lou Best has said he hopes big box stores and nice restaurants come to the area.

Top of Utah cities see splash pads as a cheap alternative to pools

Splash pads seem to be all the rage in the Top of Utah.

South Ogden, Riverdale, Clearfield and North Salt Lake already have splash pads, while others are set to open this summer in Harrisville, Morgan and Kaysville. With what are soon to be seven locations, parents and youngsters are happy with the wet, low-cost fun.

But why are cities constructing and maintaining splash pads?
