Logan begins razing homes near damaged canal

LOGAN -- Logan has begun demolishing homes on four properties damaged by a canal break that killed three people 18 months ago.

Mayor Randy Watts tells the Herald Journal of Logan that court orders prevented earlier action.

A mother and her two children died in the July 2009 disaster on Canyon Road when a century-old concrete irrigation canal broke and mud and debris buried their home.

Logan has since bought homes on Canyon Road, and Watts says the lots and the hillside above them will be turned into green space.

The mayor says it took two weeks to take care of asbestos before work began to raze the homes.
