PLEASANT VIEW -- The new concession stand at Pleasant View Park will remain empty and unused because it does not meet county health department requirements, City Administrator J.J. Allen said. Until those requirements are met, the city cannot sell any food products from it.
"I checked with the health department and, lo and behold, we can't use that building to sell concessions out of," Allen said. He said the city cannot sell so much as a bag of chips from the concession stand until improvements have been made and health department requirements have been met.
Council members voted to have concessions managed in-house this year, with Steve Moore and his wife, Angie, running the concessions. The council also voted to use Pepsi products, with Pepsi wagons in all the parks until the concession stand is usable.
Councilman Michael Humphreys suggested going with Pepsi products over Coke because the bottler is a Pleasant View business.
"Even if we have the wagon out there a couple of weeks," said Allen. "We are going to need wagons at the other two parks. We just need to know if we need one at Pleasant View Park."
Allen also said concessions are not a moneymaker for the city, and are a wash financially.
The improvements needed to make the concession stand usable are a backsplash, mop sink and a commercial refrigerator. The concession stand has sinks already, but a separate mop sink is required.
Also, the porous walls need to be smoother and filled in, so food products cannot gather in them and go rancid.
Council members are going to look into whether it would be more cost- effective to rent as opposed to purchase a commercial refrigerator.
For now the city will rent the Pepsi wagons by the month until it can get the concession stand in running order.
