Sex ed bill goes against philosophy of Utah code: Be prepared

Be prepared. While this motto works for Scouts, the law enforces preparedness by requiring classes and education that must take place in order to access various legal remedies and privileges.

House Bill 363, which is awaiting Gov. Gary Herbert’s signature (or veto), would prohibit local school boards from educating our students on the full spectrum of reproductive health, harshly limiting the discussion of sex to abstinence and within marriage. (Note: Herbert vetoed the sex ed bill late Friday night, after this column was written and posted.)

WAR program helping minds get most of workouts

OGDEN -- Athletes often speak of the workout high -- a time of clarity and concentration, a clean feeling of purity and purpose. And that "high" is just what Dustin Hawkins is using to help former addicts change their lifestyle in the Workout Addiction Recovery (WAR) program that he designed based on his own recovery from addiction.

Hawkins, a Bonneville High School alumni, baseball standout, and former Houston Astro, became addicted to prescription drugs starting with a knee surgery. He was doing the drugs, playing baseball, and sinking further into it when he started seeing a therapist for his problems.

Classes to help parents of ADHD children

OGDEN — Is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder real or just an excuse? Is medication always the right answer?

ADHD is real, said Weber County School District elementary school counselor Edward Williams, who said current research indicates 5 to 8 percent of the school population meets the criteria for ADHD. However, less than half of them actually get diagnosed. Of the half who do, less than half of those receive any meaningful treatment.

“It boils down to two to three in most classrooms,” Williams said. “Although some of them are very disruptive in the classroom, there are others who are not but cannot succeed because they just can’t stay focused or keep track of their work, despite being very bright. It takes a terrible toll on their self-esteem.”
