Bees, Falcons take home region wrestling crowns

SMITHFIELD -- As expected, the Bees and Mustangs battled for Region 5 wrestling supremacy.

And as expected, it was a nail-biter.

And perhaps as expected, the Box Elder squad had just enough extra in the tank to rise to the top following two days of wrestling at Sky View High School.

Boys basketball: Warriors take care of Darts

KAYSVILLE -- This time the numbers don't lie.

Weber dominated all key statistical categories and rode a strong second half to sweep the season series against Davis with a 56-42 dusting of the Darts on Tuesday evening.

At the risk of brain warp, some of the mind-numbing numbers include a 36-23 rebounding advantage and 23-of-26 from the free throw line for the Warriors. Weber held Davis to 29.4 percent from the floor and 0-of-10 from the 3-point line in the second half while shooting 69.2 percent in the second stanza from the field to finish at 50 percent for the game.

Girls basketball: Falcons hold out tourney hopes

CLEARFIELD -- Led by senior guard Mikenzey Wiberg's game-high 18 points, the Falcons picked up their third Region 6 win and kept their state tournament hopes alive with a 51-38 win over visiting Highland High on Tuesday night.

Wiberg helped Clearfield take a 24-21 lead at the half and the Falcons never looked back, keeping the Rams at bay with an 18-of-26 performance from the charity stripe.

"We shot very well on the line tonight," Clearfield coach Rebecca Packer said. "That was probably the biggest thing we did well. It was huge."

Pool heats up as prep elite vie for supremacy

During the next week, swim pools around the state will be echoing with the cheers and tears of Top of Utah high school swimmers as they battle for state qualifications and region titles at a handful of championship meets.

With Viewmont tucked into a Salt Lake region this year, the Region 1 forecast calls for a Weber High surge for both the boys and girls titles. They'll be led by top performers Elizabeth Tomon, Erin Nordhill, Brighton West, Rachel De Young, Mary Williams, and Rachel Wilding for the girls; and Chandler Ward, Tim Romney, Shea Smith, Drake Mendelson, Tim Romney, John Brasher, Josh Nguyen, and Jon Vu for the boys.

Prep basketball: Lancers top Falcons

CLEARFIELD -- In another one of those geographic anomalies, Layton and Clearfield met Tuesday evening in a preseason game rather than a league contest.

With the two neighboring schools residing in different regions this year, the Lancers used the game to draft a plan for their upcoming campaign this Friday. For the Falcons, it's back to the drawing board.

Layton scored early and often on the inside, led by 26 points in the second stanza, and rolled to a 60-42 defeat of the Falcons.

Prep girls basketball: Lancers wallop Warriors

LAYTON -- Non-league wins do not get you into the state girls basketball tournament.

After going undefeated during the preseason, the Lancers opened Region 1 play Tuesday against a team they hadn't beaten since a sweep in the 2006-07 season.

Limiting Weber High to a season-low point total, Layton snapped an eight-game skid versus the Warriors with a wire-to-wire 46-27 victory.

Prep basketball: Darts get the job done in OT

KAYSVILLE -- Twelve days ago, Tyson Denney was carried off the court in Orem with a badly sprained left ankle.

On Thursday evening, the Darts could have carried him off the court in celebration after his performance against Judge Memorial High School.

Denney, a 6-foot-2 senior forward and two-year starter for Davis, displayed both grit and cool experience as he splashed home six free throws in overtime to close out a come from behind 51-47 victory over the Bulldogs.

Girls basketball: Layton prevails, but loses point guard

LAYTON -- Three days before Christmas and the Lancers got an early lump of coal in their stockings.

Layton High remained undefeated Thursday -- holding off the Lakers 42-35 in a non-league game -- but lost its two-year starting point guard for four weeks and maybe longer.

Senior Amber Daly suffered a possible torn tendon in the middle finger of her left (non-shooting) hand in the last two minutes of the second quarter.

The Lancers (8-0 overall) had a 20-point lead at 1:16 of the second quarter, but got outscored 25-15 during the second half.

Prep wrestling: Alta wrests Warrior Duels title away from host

PLEASANT VIEW -- Alta High wrestlers played spoilers to the host Weber Warriors as they took top honors at the Warrior Duels wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday.

Mat marauders from eight schools clashed in the round-robin tournament at Weber High School as Alta's Zane Rasmussen (106), Matt Findlay (113), and Gavin Godfrey (152) won all seven matches in their respective classes on their way to the team podium's top spot.

Weber placed four wrestlers at the top of the 145, 160, 182, 220 classes to take second place, and Logan rounded out the top three, putting wrestlers at the top of the 126, 132, 138, 170 and 285 classes.
