Harvard’s 1st NCAA win brings ‘unexpected pride’

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Michael Lesley crisscrossed Harvard Yard, looking up from his copy of David Hume’s “The Natural History of Religion” only to avoid the tourists that shuffled through the snow-covered quadrangle.

Did he bother to watch Harvard’s victory over No. 10 New Mexico on Thursday night, the first NCAA tournament win in school history?

No.

Will Lesley, a fourth-year doctoral student in religion, tune in when the Crimson play Arizona for a spot in the Sweet 16 on Saturday?

“Absolutely. Are you kidding me?” he said on Friday afternoon, a day after the Ivy League champions upset the third-seeded and heavily favored Lobos 68-62 in Salt Lake City.

Upset city: Harvard takes down No. 3 New Mexico in NCAAs

SALT LAKE CITY — Give those Harvard kids an A-plus in another subject: Bracketbusting 101.

Wesley Saunders scored 18 points and Laurent Rivard made five 3-pointers to help the 14th-seeded Crimson pull the biggest upset in Thursday’s flurry of NCAA tournament games, a 68-62 win over No. 3 New Mexico at EnergySolutions Arena.

The university where John Adams, Teddy Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy earned degrees was making just its third trip to the tournament — and it had never won — though the Ivy League advanced in 2010 when a Cornell team made the regional semifinals.

Colorful Ole Miss star Henderson lights up Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy compares watching Marshall Henderson to watching NASCAR.

The wrecks are both unpredictable and inevitable.

The Rebels’ colorful, polarizing guard led the SEC in scoring this season, helping them win the SEC tournament and earn an NCAA tournament berth for the first time since 2002. That thrust him into the national spotlight, where he’s become the guy opposing fans love to hate.

SLC Shocker! Armstead leads Wichita State past Pitt 73-55

SALT LAKE CITY — Wichita State’s Tekele Cotton didn’t just shut down Pitt’s leading scorer, he had him in tears after the game.

The Shockers’ guard held Tray Woodall to two points while coming up with five steals and a key 3-point basket in helping ninth-seeded Wichita State to a 73-55 win over eighth-seeded Pitt on Thursday in the second round of the NCAA tournament at EnergySolutions Arena.

Stockton’s legacy to Gonzaga continues through his son

So, apparently it’s impossible for John Stockton not to influence everything he touches.

Wildcats coast as Cal Poly has no answers

OGDEN — The only lingering effects from the Wildcats’ heartbreaking loss to Montana in the Big Sky Conference tournament championship game appeared to be a desire to bounce back and put the past behind them.

NCAA: A round-by-round revelation of which 67 teams won’t win

The NCAA men’s basketball tournament tipped off Tuesday with its version of French bread rolls presented before you’ve had a chance to glance at the restaurant menu.

We’ve come to call it the “play-in” round, where the likes of a North Carolina A&T team that has lost 16 games plays Liberty University, which has lost 20. Except the NCAA prefers a more formal term than a “play-in” round. The NCAA prefers “first round.”

Haws rips Huskies for 37 points as BYU tops Washington 90-79

PROVO -- Tyler Haws scored 37 points and Brandon Davies added 22 to lead Brigham Young to a 90-79 win over Washington in the first round of the NIT Tuesday night at the Marriott Center.

Matt Carlino also scored 20 points, including 18 in the second half, for BYU (22-11).

"He put together a great half and down the stretch he was terrific," BYU coach Dave Rose said of his sophomore point guard.

BYU returns to postseason for an eighth straight year

PROVO — The college basketball season continues for BYU, and with a little luck, March Madness might even reach April. Alas, it’s not the NCAA Tournament. Still, the bonus is local BYU fans can see their team play again.

Gonzaga earns first No. 1 seed in NCAAs, comes to Salt Lake City with New Mexico, Arizona

No controversy here. Top-ranked Gonzaga is a No. 1 seed for the first time in school history.

The Bulldogs (31-2) were the top seed in the West Region when the brackets for the NCAA tournament were released on Sunday. The Bulldogs will open the tournament on Thursday in Salt Lake City against No. 16 seed Southern (23-9) in the second round.

Earning a No. 1 seed adds another first in a season of new accomplishments for Gonzaga. They enter the tournament with 31 wins, the most in school history. The No. 1 ranking in the AP poll was another first for the Bulldogs and they now have a paved path to the Final Four where they don’t have to leave the West Coast.

Syracuse seeded 4th in East, to face Montana

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Syracuse has earned the fourth seed in the East Regional and will face Big Sky champion Montana in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday.

In their final Big East appearance before heading to the ACC next season, the 19th-ranked Orange (26-9) wilted against Louisville’s relentless pressure defense and squandered a 16-point advantage during a 78-61 defeat in the conference championship game on Saturday night.
