Wildcats stumble out of gates at golf tourney

NORTH STONINGTON, Conn. -- They say in golf that you can't win a tournament in the first round, but you can certainly lose one. The Wildcats may have just done the latter, as Weber State is 29 strokes back in the opening-round 319 of tournament favorite Sacramento State at the America Sky Golf Conference championships at Lake of Isles Golf Course.

Weber State golfers finish in sixth place

CHANDLER, Ariz. — The Weber State women’s golf team finished up the 2012 Big Sky Conference championships in sixth place on Tuesday after a final-round 306 at Ocotillo Golf Resort.

Wildcats add Erling to oversee WSU men's golf

OGDEN -- Weber State University director of golf Jeff Smith recently announced the hiring of Scott Erling as an assistant coach for the Wildcat golf programs.

Erling, whose primary responsibility will be coaching the men's golf team, replaces Dave Kearl, who retired this past fall after heading up the men's program at Weber State for the past 11 years.

"I'm really excited to be here," said Erling. "To get to be a part of Weber State, and to get to work with the kids is a dream come true for me. I can't wait for things to get started. I think we've got some really good kids, and we've got some really good things coming up for the future, so with (Jeff Smith's) guidance, I think things will be really good for the program."

The Wildcats did bounce back a bit in the second round, shooting 13 strokes better in the afternoon with a 294 after opening the tourney with a first-round 307.

Sacramento State jumped out to a six-shot lead after the morning round, and increased its lead to 15 after 36 holes, shooting rounds of 288 and 284 for a total of 572.

It's all the buzz: College golf tournament called on account of bees

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The final round of a college golf tournament has been called off because of an unusual hazard at the 18th green: bees.

Texas-Arlington's UTA/Waterchase Invitational was canceled Tuesday after a limb from a tree holding an estimated 70,000 bees fell and exposed a beehive at Waterchase Golf Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

UTA spokesman Gregg Elkin said bees were swarming the area within minutes and several people were stung, though none seriously.

Elkin says a beekeeper was called in and recommended the area remain cleared for several hours. That prompted officials to call off the event early in the final round.

Results reverted to the two rounds played Monday. Wichita State won the event.
