Competition tests students’ mechanical prowess

SANDY — “If you can, start your engines.”

That was the command given by Rick Bouillon, dean of the School of Technical Specialties at Salt Lake Community College, as he started the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Competition last week for the top 10 high school automotive teams from across the state.

Of course, none of the 2013 Ford Fusions started when the competition began because they had all been deliberately bugged with identical issues.

Davis teens refine rocket to launch egg safely

CENTERVILLE — Three Davis County teenagers have qualified to compete in a national rocketry challenge that demands planning and precision, especially to keep the payload — an egg — from breaking.

Viewmont High School sophomores Hunter Davis and Quin Stewart, along with Centerville Junior High School seventh-grader Mac Johnson will compete in next month’s Team America Rocketry Challenge at Great Meadow in The Plains, Va. The May 11 competition will feature the top 100 teams from across the country.

“We have to launch a rocket carrying an egg 750 feet in the air. It has 48 to 50 seconds to return,” said Davis. “If we are off one foot in either direction we lose one point, and if we are off by a second we lose four points.”

Rainbow trout tagged for catchin’ in Hyrum Reservoir contest

MANTUA — A worker dips a large net into the water, and as he begins to pull it out, its occupants wriggle and writhe, splashing water on everyone within a 10-foot radius.

The net is placed into a tub of frigid water on the back of a vehicle. After a minute or so, the commotion dies down, and Chris Haramoto reaches in and pulls out a rainbow trout weighing about 4 pounds.

“You’ll know it when you hook this guy,” Haramoto says.
