Hellbound Glory headed for Brewskis

OGDEN -- Hellbound Glory, a rocking and raucous Reno, Nev.-based outfit that describes its music as "scumbag country," plays at 9:30 p.m. today at Brewskis. The over-21 nightclub is at 244 Historic 25th St.

In tune with the outlaw country movement that grew out of the Austin, Texas, discontent with Nashville's formulaic sound, Leroy Virgil and his band have started to build a reputation beyond their Nevada home since forming in 2004.

Karl Denson performs with his band Tiny Universe on Feb. 18 at The Depot in Salt Lake City.

Denson's music universe not so tiny

Saxophonist Karl Denson is often labeled a jazz man. Not that there's anything wrong with that -- Denson will tell you flat-out that jazz was his first love musically.

But as a musician and as a fan, he is so much more.

He first came to prominence as a member of Lenny Kravitz's band, making his debut on the rocker's first album. He stayed with Kravitz for a number of years and then went out on his own, also working with James Brown sideman/funk legend Fred Wesley, and also with Miles Davis bop colleagues Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette.

A spell playing acid jazz came next, with DJ Greyboy's The Greyboy Allstars.

With four-plus decades of playing under his belt, Salt Lake Valley musician/songwriter Randy Mundy has played all kinds of styles. But in the end, he always returns to the blues.

He brings the latest incarnation of his music to Peery's Egyptian Theater on Saturday.

Things about to get banging in Basement

OGDEN -- Get ready to get busy with Bizzy Bone of the Cleveland rap outfit Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. He plays a show at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at The Basement, 329 24th St., an all-ages venue.

Born Bryon Anthony McCane, Bizzy Bone left Bones Thugs-N-Harmony in 1998 for a solo career. He is known for juxtapositioning rapid and precise raps with a laid-back singing style. His lyrics are sometimes confessional in nature, and at other times, have a fanciful stream of consciousness nature.

Admission to the show is $12. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Uncommon Grounds, 136 25th St., Ogden. For more information, call 801-503-8568.

Wynton Marsalis performs with the Lincoln Center Orchestra Monday at Kingsbury Hall in Salt Lake City.

Top jazz players put polish on SLC show

Much like Wynton Marsalis, his New Orleans-born music director, Ted Nash -- the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra's arranger and sax/flute/clarinet man -- is from a family of musicians.

As a result, both men were given the encouragement and training they needed to be tops in their trade. And indeed, they are currently at the pinnacle of American jazz.

Nash's arrangement work on the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra album "Vitoria Suite" will be recognized when it's officially nominated for a Grammy Award later this month.

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals perform Wednesday at The Depot in Salt Lake City.

Potter and Nocturnals making mark

Pop music tends to fall into two categories -- flavor of the month or timelessly tasty.

Though relative newcomers on the scene, Vermont-born Grace Potter and the Nocturnals are making the kind of music that will last.

Like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Led Zeppelin and Tina Turner before them -- acts whose influence is evident in the band's music mix -- this quintet mixes blues and rock and soul all together in a gumbo so appealing that Rolling Stone magazine labeled the group as one of the best new bands of 2010.

Perhaps calling the musicians "new" is a bit misleading. The band, which plays Salt Lake City on Wednesday, has been hard at it for five years, refining its sound in roadhouses across America. But frontwoman Potter says band members have hit their stride with their third, eponymous album. She believes it is the first to capture their road-hewn sound and dynamic music chemistry.

Rising Royal Bliss comes to Kamikazes

OGDEN -- This weekend, Kamikazes welcomes a Wasatch Front band that has made it far beyond the Rocky Mountain West.

Salt Lake City-based rockers Royal Bliss, with support from the Logan-based band Cache Valley Cartel, will play a show at 8 p.m. Saturday. The club, for those ages 21 and over, is at 2408 Adams Ave.

Bliss, which was formed in 1997, first self-released the album "After the Chaos II," which helped the band land a contract with Capitol Records. The major-label debut landed in the Billboard Top 200, and the single "Save Me" garnered a good deal of radio play.

Royal Bliss also released an EP of an acoustic performance in 2009, recorded in front of a live audience in Capitol's legendary Studio A. A new full-length album is currently in the works.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 the night of the show. For further details or advance tickets, call the club at 801-621-9138.

Bon Jovi world tour tops ticket sales in tough '10

The concert business was hit in 2010 by some of the same tough economic times that have been gripping other factions in the music industry in recent years, but New Jersey rock group Bon Jovi has reason to pop the champagne anyway.

The band posted the highest grossing concert tour of the year not only in North America, but across the globe, topping the $200 million mark worldwide, according to figures released last week by Pollstar, the concert-tracking publication.

Archuleta shines bright in heartwarming concert

David Archuleta. Need I say more? For many teenage girls -- me included! -- not at all!

Now, if you throw in a dash of nostalgic, classic Christmas charm, a stage actor retelling a magical and historical story, and music of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, parents are just as eager to join in the festivities. This year's "Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra," with special guests David Archuleta and Michael York, was impressive and heartwarming!

Cheap concert seats due after cruel 2010

LOS ANGELES -- Concertgoers sick of ballooning ticket prices should have some extra pocket change to rattle with their rock 'n' roll in the new year.

2010 was tough for the concert business as high prices kept many fans at home. Promoters now say they plan to make shows more affordable in 2011. But they'll also try to sell more T-shirts and other merchandise to make up for lost revenue.

Heading into last summer, usually the busiest time of the year, prices were set too high despite the sluggish economy. Managers and promoters believed fans would keep paying for the one or two concerts they see on average each year.

Instead, many stayed home and dozens of shows were canceled. Lots of venues filled seats with fire-sale prices.
