Debt panel likes'chain' COLA; 'TRICARE Prime' cut offered

A congressional "supercommittee" tasked to slow the nation's rising debt appears to have reached consensus on dampening future cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) for federal entitlement programs, including military retirement, through use of a "chain-weighted" Consumer Price Index.

Americans cut spending for first time in 20 months

WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans cut back on their spending in June for the first time in nearly two years and their incomes grew by the smallest amount in nine months, a troubling sign for an economy that is barely growing.

Utah consumers more optimistic about economy

SALT LAKE CITY -- In May, on a seasonally adjusted basis, the Zions Bank Utah Consumer Attitude Index (CAI) fell to 70.7, a decrease of 1.1 points compared to April 2011. The national Consumer Confidence Index® (CCI), as reported by The Conference Board, showed a decrease of 4.2 points to 60.8. An index of 115 or higher is indicative of strong economic growth.

Utahns are more optimistic about current economic conditions than the rest of the nation. The CAI's Present Situation Index, a snapshot of current business conditions and employment, increased (4.2 points) to 46.9; compared to the national CCI Present Situation Index at 39.3. The Expectations Index, a proxy for consumers' expected changes in business conditions, jobs, and, personal income fell to 86.5 in Utah, a 4.8 point decrease from April. The national CCI Expectations Index decreased 4.8 points to 75.2.

Zions Bank to launch Utah Consumer Attitude Index

SALT LAKE CITY - In January, on a seasonally adjusted basis, the Zions Bank Utah Consumer Attitude Index debuted at 76.2, an increase of 15.6 points over the national Consumer Confidence Index®, as reflected in Zions Bank and The Conference Board's indices reported Tuesday.

Utah has little inflation in 2010

SALT LAKE CITY -- In November, on a non-seasonally adjusted basis, the Zions Bank Wasatch Front Consumer Price Index (CPI) decreased 0.1 percent compared to the national CPI, which remained unchanged, as reflected in the Zions Bank and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Indices reported today.
