Schools earn cash from mall contest

OGDEN — Newgate Mall is contributing $68,000 to area schools that collected the most receipts and points in the mall’s “My School’s Cool’ program.

Last week T.H Bell received the $12,000 cash prize for the shopping center’s 2012-2013 junior high division. Seven other awards will be presented over the next several weeks. Specific awards will be announced at each school.

KAYSVILLE — The American Association of University Women Kaysville-Davis Branch is hosting its annual Student Art Contest awards recognition at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Zions Bank, 33 S. Main St., Kaysville. The public is invited to attend.

Fan hits half-court shot, misses $50,000 jackpot

ST. LOUIS — A fan made a half-court shot before the Missouri Valley Conference tournament final, but missed a $50,000 jackpot because he forgot to hit a 3-pointer first.

Alex Pertmann of Maryland Heights, Mo., made a layup on his first try and free throw on his second effort, then scampered to mid-court, where he hit nothing but net with a couple of seconds left on a 24-second clock Sunday. After being informed of the error, and with no time remaining, Pertmann went back to the 3-point line and missed a couple of attempts.

Man wins guessing game at ski resort

EDEN — After receiving more than 100 entries, Wolf Mountain has named Gage Miller the winner of the first contest of its kind at the resort.

Wolf Mountain offers prize for guessing depth of snow mound

EDEN — The freezing temperatures of recent weeks have provided ideal snowmaking conditions for local ski resorts, and one of them has put that opportunity to use in a unique way.

Visitors to Wolf Mountain this weekend will be greeted by a large mound of snow between the lodge and the main lift — the result of a single snowmaking machine operating for 78 consecutive hours.

K-12 students invited to draw, paint for 2013 Great Salt Lake Bird Festival

FARMINGTON — The 15th annual Great Salt Lake Bird Festival is announcing its 2013 student art contest.

The contest is sponsored in part by a grant from the Davis County Commissioners’ Cup Golf Tournament and Rio Tinto Kennecott Utah Copper.

All Utah K-12 students are invited to submit an original color drawing or painting of a long-billed dowitcher using personal observation, field guides or Internet resources to research their artwork, said Neka Roundy, coordinator of the Great Salt Lake Bird Festival.

MIAMI — A contestant in a roach-eating contest who downed dozens of live bugs and worms collapsed and died shortly after winning the contest in South Florida, authorities say.

Skate park kicks off summer series

OGDEN -- SLUG Magazine kicks off the 13th year of its amateur skate series — Summer of Death, with Lords of SLUG Mag — on July 14 at Crossroads indoor skate park.

This throwback jam style contest will feature two divisions: 17 and under for the mini-rippers and an open division for the big dogs. Shredders will compete for glory on Crossroads’ (95 North Harrisville Road) indoor ramps. Registration starts at 1 p.m. and the contest starts at 3 p.m.

Shadow Valley student takes home Arbor Day grand prize

OGDEN — Sonja Stevenson thinks trees are pretty terrific.

That’s why, when her sixth-grade class at Shadow Valley Elementary decided to enter the Utah Arbor Day Poster Contest on why trees are useful and terrific, she dove right in.

Now, to her surprise, Sonja was selected to win the contest’s grand prize.
