Syracuse Mayor Jamie Nagle

Syracuse mayor on defensive, says much ado over nothing

SYRACUSE — Mayor Jamie Nagle says she is tired of pretending an ongoing discussion about the duties and responsibilities of city officials is anything but an attack on her.

During a recent council work session to talk about council policies and procedures, Nagle found herself on the defensive again as discussion turned to whether the mayor has the right to expel potentially unruly people from public meetings.

Syracuse councilman: Debate over board appointment an ‘attack on me’

SYRACUSE — Councilman Doug Peterson says an ongoing debate about the legality of his appointment to the North Davis Sewer District Board has gotten personal.

“This is an attack on me. If you don’t want me there, tell me why you want me off there,” Peterson said at the end of a work session Tuesday, when the appointment was discussed.

Syracuse council still debating board appointments

SYRACUSE — After months of delays and questions, the appointment of city council members to community boards is beginning to take on the appearance of an old Abbott & Costello routine: “Who’s on first? What’s on second?”

Following extensive discussion in a work session Tuesday, the question of local representation on the North Davis Sewer District Board got even murkier — and the potential resignation of Mayor Jamie Nagle from the Wasatch Integrated Waste Management District Administrative Control Board and a new council replacement only added to the confusion.

'Navajo Hipster Panties' clothing line sparks uproar

When Sasha Houston Brown walked into an Urban Outfitters store in Minneapolis recently, what she found created possible legal trouble for the hipster clothing chain.

Appalled by a line of products labeled "Navajo," Brown, a member of the Santee Sioux nation, wrote an open letter to CEO Glen Senk and accused the retailer of making a "mockery" of American Indian culture and identity and asking that the line be pulled from shelves.

"I take personal offense to the blatant racism and perverted cultural appropriation your store features this season as 'fashion,' " she wrote, citing "tacky" products including "Navajo Hipster Panty, Navajo Print Fabric-Wrapped Flask, Peace Treaty Feather Necklace and Staring at Stars Skull Native Headdress T-shirt."

Charter school accused of having bawdy, after-hours parties

MIAMI -- By day, the Balere Language Academy is an A-rated charter school, home to children in kindergarten through middle school.

But when the kids are tucked into bed, Balere apparently becomes a playground of a different kind.

Party fliers, printed and on the Web, indicate that the Miami campus has been hosting raunchy, booze-soaked bashes into the wee hours. One flier for an upcoming party features a voluptuous, scantily clad woman posing with champagne bottles. Another shows a woman in a string bikini bending over suggestively and a man with flashy jewelry sitting on a stack of currency in front of a gold sports car.
