Former Ogden swim coach's sex abuse trial begins with objections

OGDEN — A 2nd District Court jury was treated to a rousing start Wednesday in the three-day trial of a former Ben Lomond High School swim coach accused of sexual relations with one of her swimmers.

 The prosecution objected three times in the first two minutes of the opening arguments of the defense as Jamie Waite’s lawyer Randall Marshall opined, “The state doesn’t care about the truth. The state just wants a conviction.”

Ogden Juvenile Court project may benefit from one-time fund increase

SALT LAKE CITY — An increase in projected one-time funding this legislative session may spell good news for a local court project, House Speaker Rebecca Lockhart says.

Lockhart said a bump in one-time funds outlined in a financial projection Monday will give lawmakers the chance to invest in building projects, Lockhart said. She cited the Ogden Juvenile Court as a possible beneficiary of those funds.

Former Days of '47 rodeo chief charged with fraud

 

SALT LAKE CITY — The former rodeo chairman of the annual Days of ’47 celebration is facing criminal charges alleging he rerouted about $305,000 in rodeo funds into his own bank accounts.

Brad Harmon, 53, of Taylorsville, was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with second-degree felony counts of unlawful dealing of property by a fiduciary, communications fraud and pattern of unlawful activity. 

Johnson rape trial: Ex-Montana AD’s son testifies

MISSOULA, Mont. — Jurors in the Missoula rape trial of Jordan Johnson heard testimony Friday from Brian O’Day, a friend of the alleged victim and son of former University of Montana athletic director Jim O’Day.

O’Day testified the woman gave him a ride home from a bar after the alleged incident in February 2012. During the ride and afterward, O’Day said, she told him what had happened in her apartment with Jordan.

O’Day said she appeared pale, The Missoulian reported Friday.

Critics say Utah immigration law unconstitutional

SALT LAKE CITY — Critics of Utah’s immigration enforcement law say last summer’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling on a similar law in Arizona shows that Utah’s measure is unconstitutional.

21 more felony charges filed against Legacy Highway shooting suspect

SALT LAKE CITY — A man already charged with one count of attempted aggravated murder for shooting at a truck on Legacy Highway is set to be in court Friday to answer to 21 more felony charges.

Mario Antonio Guizar, 37, of Taylorsville, is scheduled to appear in 3rd District Court at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Former officer facing sexual misconduct charges pleads down

BRIGHAM CITY — Former Box Elder County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Womack pleaded no contest Wednesday to three counts of attempted custodial sexual misconduct.

Even though Womack will now be listed as a sex offender, he and his attorney Wednesday insisted his behavior was not sexually motivated.

SALT LAKE CITY — A drill sergeant who reclaimed custody of his young daughter after a wrenching legal fight with a Utah couple will take a desk job with the U.S. Army as part of his transition to single parent, his lawyer said Wednesday.
