Ogden teen facing shooting charge now looking at burglary charge, too

PLEASANT VIEW -- An Ogden teen charged with shooting at a drug dealer during a botched robbery in Roy two weeks ago is now facing charges in a June burglary.

Derek Frank Navarro, 17, was charged Wednesday with felony burglary and theft in connection with a June 16 break-in at a Pleasant View home.

Navarro is accused of entering a home on 900 West through a front window. Police say a woman sleeping in the basement awoke when she heard noises inside the home.

Police believe Navarro and at least two other men assisted in the robbery. Navarro never went downstairs, and by the time the woman went up to investigate, he had already fled the home with electronics and other items worth around $4,700, said Police Lt. Joey Kuni.

Police suspected Navarro after the witness provided officers with information on a vehicle used in the crime and a description of him and two others.

"We had gotten some information from a neighbor who thought they were acting suspicious," Kuni said.

Investigators believe the men randomly chose the home.

Navarro was arrested Nov. 14 after a shooting in a church parking lot near 5500 S. 2300 West in Roy. Police say he arranged to meet a man there who was to sell him drugs, but during the deal, Navarro pulled a handgun and demanded money. He then allegedly fired a few shots and drove away.

Officers pursued Navarro to a parking lot in Riverdale, where he was arrested following a short foot chase. He is charged with aggravated robbery and three other charges stemming from that incident.

The Weber County Attorney's Office was able to charge Navarro as an adult because of his prior run-ins with law enforcement and cases in the juvenile court system.
