SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah Highway Patrol says a 17-year-old boy was shot in a scuffle with a trooper during a traffic stop.
The highway patrol says the boy was shot Sunday night. He underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition at a hospital.
The highway patrol says a trooper stopped an SUV and smelled marijuana. The Salt Lake Tribune reported on its Web site Monday that he called for backup and asked the driver and four others to exit the SUV.
When the trooper thought the boy was starting to run away he stopped him. Highway patrol spokesman Jeff Nigbur says the two started fighting and a gun went off. Nigbur says the gun was apparently being carried by the boy and was not the trooper's.
The incident is under investigation.
