LAYTON — Jaime Heiner remembers well the day her life felt like it was turning back around. She had arrived at her Kaysville home to find a bouquet of flowers on her doorstep.

When Jaime discovered the flowers were actually for her, she felt a warm embrace from the person who had sent them. And that person was a stranger.

“I said to myself: ‘Someone actually cares. I’m not alone. I’m not worthless,’ ” she said.

That stranger was Lauren Wilko, who is now the Backyard Broadcast station chief for Davis High School.

Weber County Attorney: Warrant in Ogden cold case sealed to keep element of surprise

OGDEN — An arrest warrant for Stephen Phillip Ellenwood, accused of the 1993 homicide of a 92-year-old Ogden woman, had been sealed to protect another victim and witnesses, according to court documents

Weber County Attorney Dee Smith explained why the warrant was kept under wraps in an affidavit unsealed Friday.

“Stephen Ellenwood is currently not in custody and does not know that his DNA profile matched the DNA taken from the deceased’s home and another victim,” Smith wrote in the affidavit that was sealed along with the arrest warrant on April 26.

“He also does not know that his fingerprints match those taken from the deceased home. Releasing this information prior to service of the arrest warrant would provide an advantage ... to learn what the police now know and to abscond or evade apprehension. It may also endanger the other victim and other witness.”

Also, if the arrest warrant hadn’t been sealed, the case likely would have been reported by the media, which may have alerted Ellenwood, Smith said.

Utah charges: Idaho man traveled to Utah to teach bomb-making

BOISE — He was a Russian-speaking truck driver who came to Idaho nearly four years ago to join hundreds of other Uzbekistan refugees for whom the state has become a sanctuary from violence in their home country.

But federal officials say in an indictment that Fazliddin Kurbanov also was teaching people to build bombs that would target public transportation.

It’s unclear whether those alleged targets were domestic or abroad — or how far Kurbanov would have gone. Prosecutors said Friday only that they believe he no longer is a threat.
