Lack of planning leads to 2 arrests in Ogden

OGDEN -- Police say they arrested two men Wednesday who stole a water heater from an Ogden home and ran out of gas before making it even a block away.

Kerry Collins, 43, and Daniel Larry, 61, were booked into Weber County Jail on suspicion of felony theft.

Police were called around 7 a.m. Wednesday when a neighbor of a vacant home heard a bang, said Lt. Tony Fox. He said Collins and Larry were at the home on the 2200 block of Jefferson Avenue, where an antique water heater had been left on the porch.

The duo planned to sell the heater, which weighs about 300 pounds, for scrap metal, Fox said. "The plumbing company said it was worth about $2,000."

The neighbor told police he saw Collins and Larry take the heavy water heater from the porch and place it in the trunk of a vehicle.

But when the two tried to leave the house, they didn't make it far. Fox said their car ran out of gas and was sitting in the middle of the road when police arrived.

The men admitted to police they took the water heater.

Collins also was booked on a warrant; Larry was booked on suspicion of providing false information to an officer and driving on a denied license.
