WEST VALLEY CITY — Newly released police records show that Utah officials believe Josh Powell likely killed his wife and that his brother, Michael Powell, helped dispose of the body, but authorities felt they didn’t have enough evidence to prove that theory in court.

Suspect escapes Wendover police car by climbing out window

WEST WENDOVER, Nev. — A Salt Lake City man who briefly escaped from Nevada police by climbing through a patrol car window is behind bars in West Wendover on a series of drug and escape charges.

Police started pursuing 24-year-old John A. Ramirez-Juarez Monday morning after he ran a stop sign on Wendover Boulevard.

He eventually pulled into a casino parking lot, was handcuffed and placed in the police car.

However, police say he took advantage of an unlocked window and climbed through back onto the street before officers apprehended him again.

Ruling expected soon on whether Lovell murder confession will be suppressed

OGDEN — The question will be answered any day now as to whether the 2nd District Courthouse here will feature the spectacle of a murder trial with the killer’s grisly confession in sworn, open-court testimony.

Doug Lovell was sentenced to die at his 1993 sentencing hearing after he described his 1985 strangling of Joyce Yost, 39, of South Ogden, in graphic detail. After decades of appeals, his case is set for trial in February. Three years ago, the Utah Supreme Court allowed him to withdraw his guilty plea on legal technicalities.

Judge gives Nance up to 30 years in prison for shooting father

FARMINGTON — A splintered family was on display in 2nd District Court here Monday as the son was sentenced for fatally shooting the father.

Joseph Nance’s March 19, 2011, patricide of Gregory Nance has divided the family, which became obvious last month when a plea bargain was announced, reducing a first-degree felony murder charge to a second-degree felony manslaughter charge. Some family members, such as Joseph Nance’s grandparents, wanted to go to trial, while others wanted him released from jail.

No change in bail, SLC doctor will stay in jail

SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake City pediatrician charged with killing his ex-wife will remain in jail on $1.5 million cash-only bail.

Utah District Court Judge Robin W. Reese said Monday during the hearing that he was not likely to change the bail without knowing the case. The attorney for 49-year-old John Brickman Wall then decided to withdraw his request and wait until the judge assigned to the case is back next month.

PHOENIX -- Defense attorneys for Jodi Arias asked the judge to remove them from the case and declare a mistrial Monday, arguing the frenzy surrounding the case has created a modern-day witch hunt.

2 arrested in death of boy who refused to hand over iPad

LAS VEGAS -- Two men have been arrested in the killing of a teenage boy over an iPad in Las Vegas, police said Sunday.

Jacob Dismont, 18, and Michael Solid, 21, were booked Saturday into the Clark County jail on charges of open murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.
