Bees' Braithwaite earns Gatorade state honor

Box Elder High’s Kelsey Braithwaite capped her high school cross country career by being named the Gatorade Utah Girls Runner of the Year. She is the first Gatorade winner from Box Elder.

The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, as well as academic achievement and character. Braithwaite is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Runner of the Year award.

North Fork Park a joy - when it has snow

North Fork Park near Eden offers trails that can be enjoyed in any season but the park really shows off when winter's snows turn it into a mecca for skiers who don't like to wait in lift lines.

With its new Nordic Center/Warming Hut and 30 kilometers of groomed trails for skate skiing, classic cross-country skiing and snowshoe/hiking, North Fork Park has something for all levels of winter enthusiasts.

North Fork was developed as a partnership between Ogden Nordic, Weber Pathways, the U.S. Forest Service and Weber County Parks.

Since 2002, Ogden Nordic has been working diligently to develop this fabulous venue for the citizens and visitors of Weber County.

Ogden High School cross country girls earn honors

The Ogden High School girl’s cross country team was given an award and special honors at a recent school board meeting.

The team finished the season by winning state and also was ranked in the Top 15 nationally in two polls.

“This is the best and brightest we have at Ogden High School,” Principal Trevor Wilson said of the team members as they stood to be honored by the school board.

Greatest prep cross country season ever?

With Davis High's third-place finish in the Nike National Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Utah could be savoring its best season ever.

Davis' finish is the best for a Utah team since Nike started running national championships. American Fork was sixth, and ran without its top runner.

Prep sports: Darts third at XC nationals

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Davis High boys cross country squad capped an amazing season with a third-place national finish in the Nike Cross Country Nationals Saturday at Portland Meadows Racetrack in Portland, Ore.

With a race field consisting of the top 22 teams and top 45 individuals from the eight regional qualifying meets, the Darts beat Utah rival American Fork and stamped its elite season.

Conditions were typical for Portland in December: cold wind, temp in the low 40's, a little fog, and lots of mud.

Prep cross country: Darts, Tiger trio reach Nike Nationals

A group of Davis High and Ogden High runners extended their season for another month, earning sports in the Nike Nationals cross country competition with solid qualifying runs last weekend.

Ogden's Sarah Feeny and Jamie Stokes finished in the top 10 of Saturday's Nike Southwest Regional race on Saturday morning in Mesa, Ariz., and along with Orem runner Summer Harper, will represent Utah at the prestigious Nike Nationals.

On the boys side, American Fork and Davis continued their storied rivalrly outside the state's borders, and will do so again at nationals.

Cross country: Wildcat women land 29th in nation

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Weber State's young guns earned their stripes on Monday at the NCAA championships.

Weber State's women's cross country team finished 29th out of 31 teams at the 2011 NCAA Division I championship on Monday at Terre Haute, Ind.

The Wildcats were led by sophomore Amber Henry, who finished 46th overall in a time of 20:35 over the 10,000 meter course on the campus of Indiana State University.

The Wildcats were led by sophomore Amber Henry, who finished 46th overall in a time of 20:35 over the 10,000 meter course on the campus of Indiana State University.

Henry just missed earning all-America honors. The top 40 runners in the field were accorded that honor.

"Amber missed earning all-America honors by less than five seconds, but she is just a sophomore and next year she will be even better," said WSU coach Paul Pilkington. "What really excites me is that we have everyone back next year. It was good for our whole team to come here and experience what the national meet is all about. It gives them experience and knowledge about what it takes to compete at the highest level and I know this group will work hard the next 365 days to compete at that level."

Wildcats ready to run at NCAAs

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Weber State women's cross country team earned its chance to run on the national stage, competing this morning in the week's NCAA Championships.

The Wildcats are on their fourth trip to the NCAA championships, to be contested in Terre Haute, Ind.

Coach Paul Pilkington's Wildcats earned the spot by finishing third overall on Nov. 5 at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships in Provo. The 'Cats were led by sophomore Amber Henry, who finished sixth overall with a time of 21:04 on the 6K course.

WSU women's cross country going to NCAA's

OGDEN -- The Weber State women’s cross country squad is moving on to the NCAA Division I Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 21. The Wildcats, along with Northern Arizona’s men’s team earned at-large bids announced Sunday.

The women’s race will begin at 11 a.m. and a live webcast of the championships will be broadcast from 10 -11:30 a.m. on NCAA.com.

Both WSU and NAU finished third Saturday at the NCAA Mountain Regional.

The last time a Big Sky women’s team made it to the NCAA Championships was in 2008 when NAU finished 23rd.

Wildcats ready to challenge, USU, BYU

PROVO -- The Wildcats want to keep running outdoors.

To earn another race, they'll need to beat the Aggies and Cougars and a few others.

Looking for an opportunity to advance to the 2011 NCAA Division I championships, the Weber State men's and women's cross country teams run this at the NCAA Mountain Region Meet.

WSU's Pilkington tabbed Big Sky cross country coach of the year
