St. Joseph shines at Top of Utah Relays

High school cross country teams gathered at Jeanie Stevens Sports Park in Tremonton last Friday for the Top of Utah Relays.

Teams competed in a variety of unique 4K races hosted by Bear River High School.

Bingham was the top 4-A/5-A team, with St. Joseph the top team in the 1-A/2-A/3-A division race which combines boys and girls runners.

Individually, St. Joseph seniors Alex Shaw (15:23) paired with Daniel Philpot (13:51) to capture third place as a team behind a pair of Bingham duos. Box Elder's Shannan Carter and Braden Perry finished fourth overall.

In the girls race, Shaw was second overall with teammate Andrea Chavez (16:04) placing fourth.

In the boys race, Perry ran in 12:43.9 for the win, with teammate Adam Hendrickson second. Clearfield's Cody Dangerfield finished fourth.

This week, many of the top runners will gather at the Wahsatch Rendezvouse Invitational, set for Saturday at Cottonwood Park.

Recruiting advice seminar set

The decision to participate in the college recruitment process can be very overwhelming for high school athletes and their families. Student athletes must evaluate both their athletic and academic performance and take the steps to ensure that they have a chance to pursue a collegiate athletic career.

NCSA athletic recruiting educational speaker Paul Putnam will be at Ogden High on Sept. 29 to clear up the myths and misconceptions of the college recruitment process. The meeting starts at 7 p.m.

During his seminar, Putnam shares five key tips:

1. The recruitment process does not begin during the athlete's junior or senior year.

2. College coaches don't just discover talented athletes.

3. College coaches do a majority of their initial interest by looking at videos before making in-person visits to games.

4. Most opportunities to play college athletics are not Division I programs.

5. Student athletes and their families are ultimately responsible for connecting with college coaches.

For student athletes and their families who are interested in attending the seminar but don't attend OHS, please call Tiffany Menzione at (312) 624-7437 to inquire about attendance.
