Brigham City takes the next step toward becoming bicycle-friendly

BRIGHAM CITY -- After a task force suggested changes the city needs to make to become a bicycle-friendly community, the city council took the next step this week by creating a bicycle committee to help get funding.

Jack Leavitt, spokesman for the bicycle task force, told the city council he did not believe Brigham City is a bicycle-friendly community. He said awareness is the first item needed toward becoming a bicycle-friendly community.

"Awareness does not come from task forces, it comes from the top," Leavitt said.

In addition, the task force stated there needs to be a campaign to clarify the rules of the road and promote the rights of cyclists.

"They're the same as for any other vehicle," Leavitt said.

Leavitt also recommended the city create bicycle paths and put signs up from 600 North to 600 South along 200 East and 300 West to alert cars of bicycles along those roads.

"It is not necessarily that all bicyclists will ride on those roads, but it will be a big beacon that Brigham City is bicycle- friendly," Leavitt said.

Leavitt also asked that the city incorporate a safe-street plan into the city's current street plan.

"The street of 600 North was recently paved, and there were no allowances made for bikes," Leavitt said.

Mayor Dennis Fife recommended the city form a committee as a more formal source to identify funding and help the safe-streets program go through the planning commission.

"The committee can help to facilitate this to go through," Fife said.

"The key thing is, we are in support of this. We just need to figure out how we're going to do it," Councilman Bob Marabella said.
