As of Monday, the 14 students had raised 27 percent of the $4,000 they need through Kickstarter to complete funding for a three-day performing trip to a San Francisco theater known for nourishing emerging artists. The funds came from 26 backers who pledged funds through the fundraising website.

Hackenslash performs at Lagoon during Frightmares, which continues through Oct. 30. The team began performing at Lagoon in 2002 and has performed every year since, except for one, when the park received complaints that the act was “too scary,” says member Anna Brown, a 33-year-old stay-at-home mother from West Jordan. Members dance with running chain saws while wearing makeup, mechanics overalls, leather aprons, boots, gloves to the elbow, hooded sweatshirts, hockey masks and wigs — and stink of gasoline and exhaust fumes. Stay-at-home mom finds fulfillment as Hackenslash chain saw dancer

FARMINGTON — The loud, eerie “EEERRR” noise of a running chain saw can be a real attention-getter.

Add a hockey-masked monster chain saw operator, and the hearts of observers can’t help but skip a beat.

For nearly a decade, the Hackenslash Chainsaw Demonstration Team has been a part of Lagoon’s annual Halloween-themed haunt, Frightmares. But this is the first year the eight-member dance team has been elevated to what one member refers to as “legit” status — the group’s likeness is now being printed on Lagoon Frightmares T-shirts.

Instructor shares her love of dance with a younger generation

CLEARFIELD — A gallop is not the same as a skip.

The difference is that the skip is a step, hop, meaning picking up one knee, whereas the gallop is like dragging one foot behind the other.

This simple distinction is just one of many things instructor Angie Collinwood tries to impress on a young group of students. She is teaching a variety of classes for youngsters at the Clearfield Aquatic Center.

Registration open for Clearfield dance classes

The city recreation department and the Clearfield Aquatic Center are now taking registrations for three different youth dance classes.

PLEASANT VIEW — Jaden Spendlove wasn’t planning on attending his sixth-grade dance on Friday afternoon, but he’s glad he changed his mind.

“I was going to chicken out,” said the Lomond View student. “I was nervous about dancing with random people, but I practiced the steps and now I’m really glad I came.”

Dressed in a white T-shirt and jeans rolled up at the bottom, Jaden danced the waltz and swing with the rest of his classmates. The girls all wore their hair up in a high ponytail tied with a scarf. Each wore a wide swing felt skirt, called a poodle skirt, in bold colors that included red, lime green, purple, pink, blue and polka dot. The boys wore white T-shirts and jeans. Some wore leather jackets and sunglasses, and some slicked their hair back.
