DATC students bring home 10 medals

KAYSVILLE -- Students from Davis Applied Technology College, a UCAT campus, competed in the SkillsUSA State Competition held March 29-30 at Salt Lake Community College. Of those competing, 10 DATC students came home with medals, including three gold, three silver and four bronze.

Students who placed first will have the opportunity to compete in the SkillsUSA National Competition on June 23-27 in Kansas City, Mo., and will have the chance to win significant scholarships.

DATC offers summer courses for youths

KAYSVILLE -- Davis Applied Technology College will give youths, ages 14-18, the opportunity to experience college courses through its annual Summer Youth Experience.

The courses begin June 13.

Parents may choose up to two sessions at just $10 per session. Registration is available now at www.datc.edu/summer or call 801-593-2500.

For students, by students: Cosmetologists give free haircuts

LAYTON -- Reading, writing and arithmetic, followed by a haircut.

It may seem unusual, but some lucky students at Crestview Elementary School got to pause from their studies Wednesday to take advantage of the free haircuts offered by students in the cosmetology program at Davis Applied Technology College in Kaysville.

Richard “Dick” Woolf Amussen, 84, of Ogden, died Friday, March 9, 2012, at the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home. DATC solar panels cited for savings

KAYSVILLE -- Davis Applied Technology College has installed solar panels to its main building, resulting in a cost savings of $7,000-$8,000 per year, according to a news release from the school.

Bouwhuis now on accrediting board

KAYSVILLE — Michael J. Bouwhuis, Davis Applied Technology College campus president, was recently voted in as one of 20 commission members for the Council on Occupational Education, a national technical education accrediting body.

The commission membership is made up of technical education administrative officers and industry representatives of COE commission-accredited institutions throughout the U.S.

Davis commission awards grants from golf tourney to youth groups

FARMINGTON -- More than 28,000 Davis County youths from 16 organizations received a happy Thanksgiving Day gift Tuesday when the Davis County Commission awarded the groups $17,500 in grants.

Davis board of health names new chairman

CLEARFIELD -- Brent Petersen, Davis Applied Technology College's vice president of operations, has been named the new chairman of the Davis County Board of Health.

The former South Weber mayor received the health board appointment Tuesday.

Petersen, 60, replaces Dr. Ben Tanner.

Petersen, originally appointed to the board in November 2008, had been serving as the board's vice chairman.

Top of Utah youths steal, huff Freon

SYRACUSE -- At first, Ryan Rentmeister thought his mother's air-conditioning unit had just tuckered out. But when he saw that the Freon had disappeared and he could not detect any leaks, he knew he was facing a more sinister problem.

His younger brother, who lives in Sunset, recently had the same problem.
