KAYSVILLE -- Layton resident Shirley Bouwhuis is a woman who wears many hats -- all of them very well.
Bouwhuis, the Davis County Republican Party chairwoman, has been named the recipient of the prestigious Athena Award.
The Davis Chamber of Commerce Women in Business Committee recently announced Bouwhuis as the recipient of the award.
The award is to be presented at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 17 at a special luncheon to be held at the Wight House, 95 E. Main St., Bountiful.
"I am very humbled and honored to be selected for this outstanding award," Bouwhuis said. "I am in the company of great women who have previously received this award, along with other amazing women (who) were nominated this year."
The prestigious Athena Award is given to individuals who demonstrate excellence, creativity and initiative in their business or profession, Davis Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jim Smith said.
The award is also given to the individual who provides valuable service by contributing time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community, Smith said.
"Shirley's life reflects the qualities embodied by the Athena Award, sustained over years of service," Smith said. "She excels in both her professional and personal life and gives much back to the community and to the women with whom she associates."
Bouwhuis, wife of Layton Councilman Michael Bouwhuis, recently recruited Karl Rove, senior adviser to former President George W. Bush, to speak at the Davis GOP annual Lincoln Day Dinner fundraiser.
Bouwhuis has also worked with the Davis Arts Council, American Red Cross and Davis School District Foundation.
