Festivals in Davis County see larger crowds

FARMINGTON -- Festival organizers in Davis County report the recession didn't slow down the crowds at various events over the summer.

But covering expenses and increasing sponsorship also was a common challenge for event leaders.

From the Bountiful/Davis Summerfest to the annual wellness walk and run sponsored by the county, the number of participants did increase from the year before.

"This year, we were up," said Emma Dugal, the Bountiful/Davis Art Center executive director.

Dugal told Davis County commissioners Tuesday that an estimated 15,000 people attended the Aug. 5-7 event, an increase of several thousand people over last year.

The BDAC festival receives financial support of $2,500 from county tax dollars.

Like several other events, the BDAC Summerfest had a decrease of sponsorship dollars, about 25 percent less than last year, said Dugal.

"We struggled this year," she added, noting it was a free event.

At the same commission meeting, organizers for the Davis County Walks reported 333 people -- more than the previous year -- participated in the Aug. 21 wellness program sponsored by the county health department.

"We had a lot of fun," said David Spence, the Davis County Health Department associate director, who helped organize the sixth annual 5K run or walking fitness program.

Davis County Fair organizers are still tallying the numbers from their summer 2010 event.

Early reports show revenues are up from 2009, and charity donations increased at the annual event, said Dave Hansen, the Legacy Events Center director.

Hansen said it was likely the fair did not meet its expenses, and pointed out that a rainy day led to cancellations and a drop in daily revenue.

The Davis County Commission recently held its annual youth fundraiser, the Commissioners' Cup Golf Tournament, at Davis Park Golf Course.

The 13th annual tournament raised more than $14,000 for youth programs and youth scholarships.

This year, 35 teams participated in the event. The winning team, from Lindquist Mortuary, consisted of Craig McMillan, Barry Kelly, Jared Humphries and Mark Cwalinski.

Next year's tournament will be Aug. 17.
