South Weber traffic incidents trending down

SOUTH WEBER -- Detective John Olsen of the Davis County Sheriff’s Office recently presented a quarterly report to the city council.

Olsen reported there had been 137 law-related incidents last quarter, and that number had dropped to 115 this quarter. Traffic violations also fell from 260 to 147 during that time frame.

Olsen said the city was the “most well-behaved in Davis County.”

Mayor Jeffery Monroe said that once citizens figured there was a black SUV that was a sheriff vehicle in the area, they “slowed down.”

Police in tactical gear arrive on an armored police vehicle as they surround an apartment building while looking for a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings in Watertown, Mass., on Friday. The Davis County Sheriff’s Office uses a similar vehicle, called a BearCat, more as a tool to protect, not attack, says Davis sheriff’s Lt. Dave Bremer. (CHARLES KRUPA/The Associated Press)

Boston officials use Davis-style BearCat

FARMINGTON — The BearCat is a tool to protect, not a tool to attack, says Davis County Sheriff’s Lt. Dave Bremer.

That is why the unique, aggressive-looking vehicle was heavily used by law enforcement authorities in the Boston area as they searched for the second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings.

“Whether they are on national news (with a BearCat) or not, we feel as validated as providing the vehicle, as providing deputies with bullet proof vest,” Bremer said.

Davis County's BearCat: Excessive or defensive?

In the eyes of Davis County residents, the BearCat armored vehicle sits somewhere between public safety, police state and the Batmobile.

Since the high-profile use of Davis County Sheriff’s BearCat in a chase on Interstate 15 in February, residents’ reactions to the vehicle have been mixed.

West Point resident Dennis Bergendorf is one of several people who described the vehicle as “overkill.”

Davis sheriff: Allow deputies to drive vehicles home, pay fee

FARMINGTON — The Davis County sheriff is hoping to one day provide a “car per man” for his department’s patrol division so armament and medical equipment won’t have to be shuffled from one emergency vehicle to another and so sheriff’s deputy paramedics won’t have to secure that equipment in their personal vehicles during off-hours.

Davis County deputizes federal agents to enforce local laws in foothills

FARMINGTON — Deputizing two U.S. Forest Service agents as Davis County Sheriff’s deputies will further extend the long arm of the law in the Davis foothills.

For years, the Davis County Sheriff’s Office has contracted with the U.S. Forest Service to have the county respond to state and city violations committed on forest service property.

But now that “hand-in-hand” working relationship is being extended the other way, with the sheriff’s office deputizing federal agents Brandon Robinson and Tawny Hancock, who are responsible for patrolling the forest lands in Davis County.
