Harrisville man accused of stealing $4,000 saddle from former West Point neighbor

FARMINGTON — A 21-year-old Harrisville man is accused of stealing a $4,000 custom-made saddle from a barn in West Point.

Davis County Sheriff’s Sgt. Susan Poulsen said Harrisville and Pleasant View police officers arrested Mitchell Lee Child on Thursday as he tried to leave through the back door of his Harrisville home.

Convicted sex offender awaiting polygraph in new child sex abuse case

FARMINGTON — A convicted sex offender is waiting to take a polygraph test before his current felony case can proceed.

James Lee Ferguson, 30, who is serving six months in jail for an unrelated case, is charged with one count of sodomy on a child, two counts of rape of a child and three counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, all first-degree felonies. He is also charged with two second-degree counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.

Ferguson appeared Thursday in 2nd District Court with his attorney, Bill Albright.

Davis County OKs two buildings for sheriff's storage

FARMINGTON — Storing Davis County Sheriff’s Office tactical equipment and vehicles out of the elements is expected to extend the life of the emergency equipment.

The Davis County Commission gave notice to proceed with the construction of two large metal buildings in west Farmington.

The county said it planned to start construction immediately.

Policies on wearing body armor vary across Top of Utah

OGDEN — Ogden patrol officers were not required to wear protective body armor vests when they responded to a fierce Jan. 4 gun battle that left one lawman dead and five others wounded.

At the time of the shootout, police department policy only required officers to purchase vests through a federal grant reimbursement program but did not state anything about wearing them, said Ogden Police Chief Mike Ashment.

The policy was changed in January after the shooting to require all uniform, crime reduction, community policing and traffic officers to wear body armor, Ashment said.

Davis County Sherrif gets specialized Humvee for mountain rescues

FARMINGTON — To get to those hard-to-reach mountainous places for emergency search and rescue and medical care, the Davis County Sheriff’s Office is receiving a surplus Humvee on loan from the military.

The 1990 model, with only 40,000 miles on it, is valued at $46,000, said Davis County Sheriff’s Sgt. Susan Poulsen.

On Tuesday, the Davis County Commission accepted the donation from the federal government, and approved the $1,018 transaction fee in making the donation possible.

Slew of vehicle burglaries strikes West Point subdivision

WEST POINT — Residents in a West Point subdivision understand crime happens, but a rash of vehicle burglaries in one small area have them a little worried.

Davis County Sheriff’s Lt. Susan Poulsen said 16 vehicles at nine addresses within the subdivision just south of 300 North were burglarized over the weekend. One vehicle just north of 300 North was also burglarized.

Poulsen said the number of vehicles burglarized, all within that small of an area, and in a short period of time, makes this case unusual.

Law officers: Toy guns look like real thing, create danger

In the middle of the night, the suspect appeared to be an adult male — and the gun looked real.

“It was the most intense, scariest situation I’ve ever been in,” said Davis County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Benedict.

Two arrested after explosions at Bountiful schools

BOUNTIFUL — Police arrested two students who they said created explosions at Bountiful High School and near Millcreek Junior High School, resulting in both schools being locked down for about 90 minutes Wednesday.

The schools are about two blocks apart.

The two could also be charged in juvenile court following a review by the Davis County Attorney’s Office.

'That's me': Drug suspect points himself out to immigration services

FARMINGTON — A 37-year-old man wanted by immigration services made it easy for officers to arrest him Friday.

“We saw this man (walk in) and we asked him what his name was. He pointed to his picture, not 10 feet away from him,” said Davis County Sheriff’s Deputy Phil Rogers.

Facebook aids in suspect's arrest

WOODS CROSS -- Facebook helped find the second man wanted in a computer store burglary, police say.

Brandon Rock Medell, 33, of Syracuse, was booked Wednesday into Davis County Jail on suspicion of burglary and criminal mischief. He is expected to be in court today.

Man recognizes burglar on surveillance video, persuades son to turn himself in

WOODS CROSS — A father watching a TV news program recognized his son as one of the people wanted in a computer store burglary, police say.

While the two were eating breakfast Friday morning, the father persuaded his son, Jeremy Blair, 26, of Kaysville, to turn himself in to the Davis County Sheriff’s Office, said Woods Cross Police Detective Adam Osoro.
