FRUIT HEIGHTS — A knife-wielding man wanted by law enforcement thought he was prepared for officers entering his house, but he was not expecting to see Jak come through his bathroom door.

The 5-year-old, 80-pound Belgian Malinois, who is a member of the Davis County Sheriff Office’s K-9 Unit, subdued Jeffrey Paul Ellis, 27, until officers could safely enter the house and take him into custody Saturday.

Ellis was arrested for felony warrants dealing with possession of a controlled substance and domestic violence.

FEMA funding likely for Davis wind damage

FARMINGTON -- It appears Davis County entities will receive federal aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency because of the damage from the Dec. 1 hurricane-force winds that tore through the area.

SYRACUSE — An 18-year-old Syracuse man is facing charges after rolling his car while huffing air duster, a chemical used to clean electronic appliances, police say.

At 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Spencer Steven Nicolas rolled a green 2000 Chevy Malibu at 3361 W. 700 South, said Detective Heath Rogers.

Bomb technician leaves force after 24 years

FARMINGTON -- "Uncle Bob" finally retired from the Davis County Sheriff's Office.

Detective Bob Hunt, 73, hung up his holster and swapped it for golf clubs after 56 years of public service, with the last 24 years dedicated to making Davis County streets safer as a bomb technician and crime lab detective.

"We didn't think he'd ever retire," said his daughter, Chelsea Van Vliet.

Davis School District wants to improve weather procedures

FARMINGTON — Davis School District’s administrators want to improve the procedure for weather-related school closures following Thursday’s windstorm.

“We understand Centerville had their hands full and wanted to get as many people off the streets as soon as possible, but we need to control the situation,” said Christopher Williams, the school district’s communication and partnerships director.

Woman arrested after slow chase being evaluated

BOUNTIFUL — A woman is undergoing a psychological evaluation after a slow-moving car chase that started at 1:17 a.m. Monday.

A Davis County sheriff’s deputy spotted the woman traveling south on Interstate 15 near Bountiful at about 30 mph, said Davis County Sheriff’s Sgt. Sue Poulsen.

Man dies, woman injured in Fruit Heights accident

FRUIT HEIGHTS — The Friday night snowstorm contributed to a fatal auto-pedestrian accident and sent many other vehicles crashing into each other and off the road in the Top of Utah.

The storm blanketed the Top of Utah with at least an inch of accumulation an hour, with more than that in the mountains, according to the National Weather Service.

Mark Seegmiller died and his widow is in critical condition after they were hit by a vehicle during the storm.

Davis lawmaker seeks crackdown on spice makers, sellers trying to skirt law

KAYSVILLE -- Despite the tweaking of its components, selling a different version of the synthetic marijuana product known as "spice" is still illegal, a Davis County lawmaker says.

"They think they have found a loophole," Rep. Paul Ray, R-Clinton, said of those trying to put the product outside the reach of the law.
