Mild winter leaves Top of Utah with piles of salt and money

The snowplows have been sitting idle most of the winter in the Top of Utah, thanks to the mild weather and relative lack of snow.

Now, municipalities find themselves with piles of road salt and money left in their budget.

Fruit Heights’ four snowplows have only had to plow twice and been out another couple of times salting city roads. The city normally uses nearly 1,000 tons of salt each winter, but this year has gone through only 320 tons, according to Fruit Heights Public Works Street Supervisor Dan Green.

Will tablets be the newspaper industry's salvation?

The tablet could be just what the doctor ordered for the ailing newspaper industry.

The Pew Research Center’s annual Project for Excellence report indicates that the growing number of tablet computers and smartphones is contributing to an influx of people returning to traditional news sources, like newspapers, online. The growing use of social media has also led to more digital exposure to news stories through referrals.

We’ve seen this trend in our own analytics. Traffic to our mobile site has doubled in the last year, especially since we introduced an app.

County mulls Antelope Island Causeway surfacing options

FARMINGTON — Adding 2 inches of road surface over the length of the 7.2-mile Antelope Island Causeway is going to cost Davis County between $1.1 million and $1.2 million, based on contract bids received Tuesday.

But in case Davis County Public Works doesn’t have the funds needed for the project, which it budgeted at about $1 million, it also made the four prequalified contractors submit alternative bids to overlay the causeway with 1 1/2 inches of new surface, which would provide a slight savings to the county.

On Tuesday, the Davis County Commission opened the four bids submitted for the causeway work, with a final contract bid to be awarded at its 10 a.m. Tuesday meeting at the Memorial County Courthouse, 28 E. State St., in Farmington.

On the Deuel Creek Trail in Centerville

The Deuel Creek Trail is a beautiful hike up Centerville canyon that can be enjoyed during any season. The trail can be accessed on either the north or south side of the canyon with a kiosk marking each trailhead. Shade, granite rock and small waterfalls highlight the trail.

An ideal hike is to begin hiking from the south trailhead and return on the north trail. From the south trail kiosk, this pleasant, two-mile loop begins by following an old pipeline until it meets the creek at one-quarter mile. After the junction with the creek, the trail follows the cool and shady canyon bottom along the tumbling stream. The trail crosses the creek several times on bridges built and maintained by a Centerville resident. A wide variety of wildlife can frequently be seen along the trail.

Weiler chosen to replace Liljenquist in State Senate

BOUNTIFUL — The Davis County Republican Party is experiencing two major changes by welcoming a new state senator and saying goodbye to its party chairman.

On Tuesday night, in a special election at South Davis Junior High School, county delegates elected Todd Weiler, former Utah Republican vice chairman, to replace Dan Liljenquist in the Utah Senate. Weiler will represent Senate District 23 as the outgoing Liljenquist turns his attention to his U.S. Senate campaign, challenging Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah.

“I’m excited to get to work,” said Weiler, 44, who won with 57.6 percent of the vote in the seventh round. “I recognize I have a lot to learn, and I just want to do my very best to represent the good people of south Davis County.”

"Eventually, that area will be a destination point in which many people will gather and enjoy what's around them," said Mayor Steve Curtis.

FRUIT HEIGHTS -- Davis County Animal Care and Control officials hope cities will adopt ordinances requiring the licensing of cats and allowing an additional pet per household.

The ordinances are aimed at helping animal control staff return more wandering and loose animals to their owners, thus curbing the number of dogs and cats that have to be euthanized.
