FARMINGTON -- A former second-grade teacher who was charged with two class B misdemeanors for selling school supplies and equipment has been charged with a third-degree felony for possessing heroin.
Amy Elizabeth Carroll, 36, appeared in 2nd District Court on Monday before Judge Michael G. Allphin. Another hearing on the felony charge is set for Aug. 30.
Public defender Bill Albright said during Monday's hearing, Carroll is facing charges out of two other courts.
Carroll was arrested by Woods Cross police on July 9 following a traffic stop, according to court documents. A computer check showed the vehicle's registration had expired.
Officers impounded the vehicle and searched it. In the driver-side door, they found "spoons and other paraphernalia containing heroin residue," according to the court document.
According to the court website, Carroll was also arrested on June 9 by Murray City police and charged with a class A misdemeanor retail theft. She has a court hearing scheduled for that case in 3rd District Court in Salt Lake City on Aug. 26.
Layton police arrested Carroll in April after they received a tip she was possibly stealing items from Lincoln Elementary School, where she worked, and selling them at a swap meet in Riverdale.
She was charged with two class B misdemeanors, theft and theft by receiving stolen property. Her next court hearing for that case is set in 2nd District Court in Layton on Aug. 3.
Carroll was hired by Davis School District in 1998 and worked at Syracuse Elementary before going to Bluffridge Elementary in 1999. In 2006, she transferred to Lincoln, said Christopher Williams, the district's community relations director. Carroll was placed on a paid leave of absence following her arrest in April and was terminated June 9.
